A week to til surgery and I have a bad cold -

Hi Everyone,

Just a little bit of a rant for this cold Monday morning. I woke up yesterday full of a cold...the works - head pounding, congested, full ears, sore throat.

My surgery is scheduled for a week today and I have family scheduled to fly in this weekend to help out with my kids.

Am I crazy to be worrying about the procedure being postponed? Can surgery be cancelled due to a cold? Should my family be rescheduling their trip, it would be pointless them arriving only to have the surgery canceled.

I don't need this worry this week, a cold is the last thing I thought I would be freaking out about.

Does anyone have a magic remedy? I'm dosed up on Tylenol and Vitamin C.

Thanks guys for listening!

Yes, it can. But if it is truly only a cold, I'd bet it will be gone by then.

On the day of my surgery, during the pre-op stuff, they took my temperature and it was one degree high. One stinkin degree. They were thisclose to cancelling, but fortunately one of the nurses got another thermometer and checked it again and it was normal. I was seriously about to cry. To get mentally prepared for it and then to be sent home, that would have sucked.

They will not proceed if there anything that increases the risk of infection. I would do exactly what Beeba mentioned above and definitely call your doctors office and find out specifics. I know it would be a real hassle if they ended up cancelling on you, but it is for your safety. (and to cover their butt)

I wouldn't have anyone rescheduling just yet, your surgery is a week away-- and your family isn't coming until the weekend, there is a really good chance you will be on the mend by then. Get rest, lots of fluids!!

Good luck, I hope you are feeling loads better by thursday so you can rest assured your surgery will continue as planned!

Thanks Beeba and Wendy. I did tried the doctors office but seems like they are closed today. I will be contacting them first thing in the morning. I think I have picked it up from my son and combined with a lack of sleep it has just taken its toll. He got over it very quickly so I'm hoping its the same for me. I don't have a fever so I'm sure it is just a cold.

Hospital suggested I go to my PCP - went last night and he gave me a combination of antibiotics, strong cough syrup and steroid spray. Fingers crossed it works!
