My son who was 13 had surgery in June he is now 14. The surgery was a success. However, he gets sick very easily and can't seem to kick the illness for a very long time. He still does have the headaches and is now being seen by a headache specialist. The headaches are different than before. He has been back to the surgeon 4 times post op to be sure nothing has gone wrong. The MRI's have really been beautiful. The fluid is flowing nicely and the tonsil has retracted. The surgery was brutal but he recover and is glad he had surgery. It was truly life changing. However, as I said he does still have issues. There have not been any surgery complications however he is still healing. When he over exerts himself he gets a headache. I was told that it could take 6 months to a year to completely heal from the surgery. He is an impatient teenager. I am frustrated because I feel like he just keeps getting passed around from doctor to doctor. He can't seem to get a break and has missed 34 days of school this year alone. I think that the most important thing is to stay positive give time for healing. As a parent that can be very difficult as we want our children to be healthy and happy kids. Has anyone had trouble with illness after the surgery? I don't know if it is because his body is focusing on still recovering from the surgery or if there is something else.
Hi Lisa, I know from many members here that the full recovery and benefit from surgery can take a year or more. This is also a time when many natural changes are taking place in your sons teenage body so he is facing many changes and challenges. It's easy for me to say but it does still seem very early days. I'm sure others with experience of surgery will respond and reassure you. Kindest, Jules
Jules, thank you for your response. I really appreciate it.
Hi my son had his surgery on 17th November so will keep you posted.
My doctor suggested a good vitamin b and magnesium.
I just buy the one that fizzes in water.
He also suggested a saline nose spray everyday - as Chiara patients tend to catch colds easier than others.
And yes surgery was very traumatic - and very sore - believe me for the first few days - no pillow works - no ice works as you cant even lift your neck to put it under
