Stroke + Chiari?

I was diagnosed with Chiari about 2 1/2 years ago. Have been struggling with doctors to get them to believe me that it is causing me problems and impacting every aspect of my daily life.
Last night, i am sitting on the couch and i have a small stroke (according to the doctors at emergency). Does anyone know of any correlation between the two or is this a separate serious item to add to my list?

It’s my understanding they are two different things.

I do have problem with people believing me including my doctor.

I am so sorry to hear that. Migraines with aura are triggered by Chiari for me. Those flares sometimes come with stroke-like symptoms (numbness, speech issues, etc), but I’ve never heard of an actual stroke being related to Chiari. Prayers are with you!

Actually, there is a young lady on youtube that documented her case and she had an episode that was severe enough that it was diagnosed as a stroke. I also had one episode that caused white matter changes to my brain. I have had some memory issues since then. One specialist I saw thinks it was a mild stroke, but other doctors disagree. However, I did not have the white matter changes in the previous MRI and they have not progressed and I have lots of episode since then. When I went to the ER, the ER doc did not take me seriously even though my BP was at stroke level and the left side of my face dropped. She said it was a migraine with aura and that it was related to my cycle, but I was pregnant!! My primary told her to keep me longer, but ER doc disagreed and sent me home. On the way home, I had another attack and this was the one that led to the white matter changes on the brain. Since the first hospital did an MRI and then Cleveland clinic did one after my second attack, we can pinpoint it. If the flow or pressure gets too much, you can have a stroke! When I get the episodes, my BP spikes. High BP can cause a stroke.

Divine, have you been diagnoised with migraines? Because migrianes can, and do, cause strokes in a certain (very small percentage) of people. This is different than chiari.

This is not to say chiari can’t cause changes it the brain, it can. But based on what you’re saying happened it makes me wonder about a migraine or stroke connection more than chairi, particulary because it was so quick and servere.

I have had strokes, but not since my surgery

I have my next MRI next week to check for changes to my brain since the stroke and to get a better look at how my chiari has progressed over the last 18 months since my last MRI.
