Question for multiple surgery chiarians

Hey group,

I am experiencing repeat symptoms and I was told to mentally prepare myself just in case I need a second surgery.

I am wondering if, when you have a second surgery, if they go in the same place they did your first surgery or if they move over? Like would they just cut into my existing scar and go from there?

I’m curious. I admit I am a little strange and I love my scar because I fought for it and fought to be diagnosed and honestly, I wouldn’t mind a second scar if I had to have another surgery. I know that’s super weird but… scars are a great conversation starter and I need all the help I can get to meet people. haha kidding. Love you guys. Thanks for your support and advice  <3

I haven't had multiple surgeries, but I did want to say that I love my scar as well. I feel that I fought for it and I am okay with everyone knowing it. So many people kept telling me how it was good that my hair would cover my scar up for me and I always replied saying I didn't care if my scar showed.

Me too! Most of my family says, ‘oh keep your hair long it will hide that scar’ and I’m like ‘pixie cut!!’ hahaha.

NieNie, what’s going on? What kind of surgery did you have? Duraplasty? Plate to the back of your skull? Just bony decompression? What’s the new surgery?

I’ve had two surgeries: two decompressions and cranial cervical fusion. Same entry point for both, same scar. It’s just a little uglier this second time around.

Before you have a second surgery- have had EDS and cranio cervical instability ruled out? CCI includes basilar invagination, retroflexed odontoid, sharp clivo-axial angle, and abnormal amount of movement of Ccranio cervical joints due to lax ligaments.

How are you feeling?

Jenn

Ps hard won surgery is an understatement!!! I don’t feel the need to hide my scar- it’s part of me.

I don’t know if I will need a second surgery but I’ve been told it could be an option depending on what shows up on the MRI. I had decompression surgery, they widened the hole at the base of my skull and took the prong thingy off the back of my first vertebrae. I’m having recurring symptoms and they think it could be stenosis or that my herniation has increased. But they won’t know until the MRI is complete.

Keep us up to date

I had a second surgery 7 months after my decompression. I had a pseudomeningocele. I got a lot of symptoms back. But the repair surgery was much easier than the decompression. The bovine patch that they used had deteriorated. So they went in thru the same incision used my own tissue and it’s been much better since.

How was the healing process with them using the same incision site?

For me, I think the scar healing is turning out to be the same- my neck hurts this time around because of the posterior fusion, though. Scar is just a little thicker than before.
