I'm still trying to figure out what in my body is caused by Chiari, or other related syndromes, and what's just odd by itself. I get this weird numbness that pops up on the top of my right thigh about 6 inches down from my hip then spreading out like an open hand across the top of my thigh, wrapping a bit arround to the outside of my thight and down to just above my knee. It falls asleep with out notice, then I realize I can't feel that part of my leg and start moving it arround and twitching the muscles and it starts to tingle and come back again, only to fall sleep again not too long after. This happens when I'm standing up, laying down, or even walking. When I told the neurologist about it he said it can happen to people when they wear tight pants, it compresses a nerve in the back, but I don't wear tight pants. All of my pants are slightly loose fit on me since I hate to feel confined. It happens all the time when I'm not wearing pants or even a skirt. My underwear isn't tight either. I don't have obvious disc buldges in my back that the doctor saw. Does this happen to any one else? I'm starting to worry about it more because the area affected is slowly spreading as is the frequency that it happens. Its been taking more to bring it back to feeling again as well. Does anyone else have this issue? Should I be worried?
Dont worry! I get this also, but in my hands! Sometimes I get very weird dizzy sort of feeling, and whenever I get this my hands usually get all numb and tingly. I talked to my doctor about it, and he said it's 100% normal. Don't worry about it! :D
I get the same sensation in both feet and hands.
Since early December my left hand has had issues: my ring finger and pinky finger through the palm (but not into the wrist) has been anywhere from 50-85% numb and tingling. Originally My surgeon said it should clear up with steroids, I had and EMG test and was inconclusive.
Miriam,
The same thing happens to me! It started in my right thigh, but now it happens in both legs.
I have Chiari, Syringomyelia (syrinx/cyst in spinal cord), and multiple herniated discs. So, I was never sure which one of these problems was causing the numbness in my thighs. Have you had a full spine MRI to check for a syrinx? If not, you should so that can be rulled out.
You should definitely talk to a NS that specializes in Chiari. Most doctors, including NL, are just not knowledgable about Chiari. It’s sad, but true:( I’m still waiting to get in with the NS, so I don’t have anymore info.
I hope it helps to know that someone else is going through the exact same thing:)
