My niece is having surgery today for CM/SM...I suggested my surgeon..but she feels very comfortable with the one she saw....
My concern is that the surgeon is doing a minimal surgery(of course, this is just my opinion)...going in through the back of neck..C1...shaving some of C1, cutting out scar tissue around the syrinx and that is it..no removing skull bone and thus not opening the dura...
Have any of you guys heard of this type of surgery???
Well...Meg got out of surgery yesterday afternoon....She is 6 hrs away in RI..I am getting info from my nephew....He told me the incision is small.....the NS told him she shaved C1 and the flow is restored..she was unable to remove any scar tissue around the syrinx b/c it was too risky..spinal cord..ect..
I know there are many different approaches to Chiari/SM surgery....I am still baffled at how just shaving some bone on C1 can be effective..any thoughts?????
