How long did you take off work after surgery?

Hi Everyone,

I go in for surgery on Jan 28th, so right now work is all about making lists and arranging cover for my numerous responsibilities. I am a control freak and I worry about what will happen when I have time off and I rarely take vacation time of more than a few days for this reason.

My NS said I should plan a minimum of 4-6 weeks and then it will depend on if I can drive or not to get to work. I can do my job from home and work half the week from home as it is.

I guess I am wanting to know how much time I should plan to be "off" from work, and when I can expect to be up to light work from home. I know each individual is different so I'm hoping to hear how everyone went about returning to work.

Thanks for the advice

Helen

I was originally scheduled to return to work at 4 weeks but I have chronic mono and got a big flare up so the doctor gave me an extra 2 weeks off. I've been back at work 5 weeks and am doing pretty well but I do get rather tired and sore by weeks end.

Thank you both...I spoke with my boss and we have decided to arrange cover for 4 weeks initially and then to go from there. I will not be going into the office for at least 6 weeks, and then I have said I am not willing to drive during rush hour. My boss is overall very flexible and understanding. After the initial 4 weeks I am hoping to do bits and pieces as and when I feel ok from home. My biggest worry is lose of income during this time, as temp disability does not even come close to covering what I need!

Glad to hear that you have some relief coming your way :). I have the very same question in mind. My surgery is next Wednesday. Hope everthing works out for you health wise and financially. I am personally worried about finances. I hope that wont be a worry for you.

Same to you Roxanne - Wednesday is close....how have you been preparing? I'm starting to get a little nervous but generally keeping it together at the moment. I think I will be a wreck when I get to the week before. I wish you all the best, and hope the surgery helps relieve your symptoms.

Finances are a worry to me also, I'm not sure how long we can cope on one salary when outgoings will be the same (daycare etc).

Yes! Wednesday is very close…I have my cousin to help out with the cleaning at my house. I am cleaning from top to bottom, and that’s hard to do with a 2 yr old to run after lol. I set up an outing with my closest friends because I don’t think I will be out for a while. I am also preparing to live off of a one income household. I am very concerned about keeping my three children involved in their activities, but as I am in constant prayer I feel better. Sometimes my nerves are a wreck! Then I turn to this place. I am encouraged here and I love that…everyone here picks me up when I am down. Here and everywhere else in my life I have people reminding me to keep my faith in GOD!. Thanks so much for the well wishes. If there is ANYTHING I can help you with feel free to reach out to me.

I have help coming too - my husband and I are both from England originally, so have no family locally. We have different family members visiting from England for a total of 4 weeks so they can take care of cleaning and running the children everywhere they need to be.

You are right this forum is the best - I have found lots of great advice here. Not that I would wish Chiari on anybody but it is such a relieve to know other people are going through the same as me.

I am here for you also, I look forward to hearing how your surgery goes and your recovery!

Well that is fantastic. Glad to hear that you have help on the way. Prayers for you and your family as you go through your surgery and praying for your speedy recovery
