I have a question for the general populace of people who whave had chiari's surgery. Have any of you lost your gag reflex PRIOR to having surgery? My daughter's nuerosurgeon is saying that he has never seen a Chiari's patient who needed surgery that still had a good gag reflex. I just want to get a baseline because her nuerosurgeon has more experience with Type 2 Chiari's than type 1 like my daughter.
I lost my gag reflex around two years before my surgery. I was surprised how many things seemed to be turned back on after my surgery including my "gag" reflex.
I also lost my gag reflex before surgery. It has since returned. It is not as strong as it had been, but I don't mind because it was a little overactive anyway.

i lost my gag reflex long before surgery - i'm about 10.5 years post op and it never got better - could be because i'm one of the older patents? - 43 yrs old when i had my surgery and have had problems since childhood - back in the 60's all my problems were blamed on sinuses - surprised?- not really
