Will surgery fix the loss of a gag reflex?

For those that had no gag reflex before surgery, does it come back? Or is that one of those things that is just gone for good?

Something Witty,

I noticed that no one has replied. I have not had the surgery. I do like the website conquerchiari.org. I only found info about kids and it looks like of the 5 they were testing all 5 did get their gag reflex back. I would encourage you to look there and see maybe if there is some more info for adults as well? Also I like the Mayo Clinic since a friend in the medical field grew up in Minnesota and said they were the best with Chiari in the area so I tend to trust what I read on their site. Sorry I can't tell you anything for sure. Please let me know if I can help with anything else? Also you might try sending a private message to someone that has had the surgery. Good luck to you!

I had surgery about 6 months ago and I was told prior to surgery that I had almost no gag reflex. Personally I have noticed no difference in gag reflex since surgery. I have had a reduction or many of my other symptoms but this has not been one that has changed as of yet. We are all different and I had symptoms for 20 years prior to surgery so that may play into it. I am sure there is a possibility in your case it could come back after surgery. But so far 6 months out mine has not returned. Hope that helps.

Before Chiari I had an over active gag reflex. With Chiari, I almost lost it completely. After surgery, it is back and it is bad. Lol, so yeah. Mine did come back. It was noticable for me because of it being overactive. Some people may not notice it as much. I can't even brush my teeth without throwing up. It was kind of nice to have a break for a little bit. It did take a little while, but I am about a little over a year post op and it is fine now.
