What to expect

I go in for my decompression surgery on Monday the 10th and my anxiety and nervousness has kicked in hats should I expect post op any info would help also how long is the recovery process

I was impressed at how well my pain was managed after surgery. I have a few bouts of nausea that were caused by valium. Once they stopped that I felt much better. The first week in the hospital is kind of a blur. I was pretty sleepy most of the time. I had low pressure headaches from time to time and that was probably the worst part of recovery. By the end of week 2 I was feeling pretty good, not a lot of pain. My neck was a little stiff, but nothing too severe.

As the time went by I felt better and better. I am 5 1/2 weeks post op now and have started physical therapy. But I can drive now and it feels good to get out of the house! My follow up is in about 3 weeks and I am looking forward to it! I expect to be released to go back to work the following week (I am actually looking forward to it at this point).

My pre-surgery fears were way worse that the actual surgery and recovery!

Good luck! And update us when you feel like it!

I was a nervous wreck prior to surgery but I think I had one of the easiest recoveries. I was only in the hospital overnight and my pain was very well controlled. I had some neck stiffness and soreness and I was really, really exhausted for weeks but otherwise I felt pretty good. My #1 advice is just rest as much as you can and to try to get up and take a short walk daily if you NS says that's ok.

Thank you all for the advice it has been very helpful in trien to paint a picture of what to expect

I'm mostly concerned about recovery I'm active duty mil stil and they are giving me 30 days off to recover after which there expectation is I should be able to go about my job fine. I am a fleet marine force corpsman so I work with the marines a lot is this a realistic expectation or are they setting me up for a medical seperation because that has been recommended to me already due to tbi injury and ptsd diagnosis

It took me a full 8 weeks to get back to work and I had a really easy recovery. I have a desk job as an accountant.

I for one don't think you would be able to continue.

I was in the military albeit I was in the Army and I was in the dental/medical field.

I don't feel like I would be able to do my duties full force.

I don't mean to be negative but realistically...not likely.

Is there any way you could get disability via the military if you cannot perform your duties?

This is my first day post op pretty soar and still in icu but over all doing ok

Great to hear from you! Hopefully the soreness will pass soon! Rest up! :)

Out of the icu and in a regular ward room now how long does the neck uassally hurt afterwafs

I’m glad to hear everything went well Johnathan! I haven’t had the decompression surgery so I don’t know about how long the neck hurts afterward. Take care and keep us posted!

Prayers for a speedy recovery!!!!

I am being discharged today yahhhhhhh

Good news! Being at home is so much more relaxing! How does the neck feel? It's been through some pretty major stuff so it will be sore and stiff for awhile. Did they give you any exercises to do? I had some stretching exercise I did daily and I tried to take short walks each day. I think it helped with the soreness and stiffness. You'll be really tired so just give into and rest!

Wonderful news!!!! Go home and take it easy!!!

Here is my welcome to the zipperhead comunityy
