Symptom?

Hey everyone,

I was diagnosed with chiari about a year ago. About 5-6 months ago my ear started to beat a booming sound. Its not a heart beat of any sort and it doesnt go with the rhythem of my heart. Has anyone had this type of symptom or know if it's associated to chiari? To describe this, just put your palm against your ear and gently tap it with your other hand. Maybe it's just me. Has anyone dealt with this problem?

I’m not sure…I know that ringing in the ears is a Chiari symptom, so this definitely could be. I would ask your doctor about it. Hopefully, someone else here will have some more input.

I’m glad to see that you’re already starting discussions:) I think you’ll be very glad you joined this group.

Over the years I have had alot of different hearing/auditory issues. Ringing in the ears, rushing water sounds, being able to hear/feel my pulse beat in my ear, the feeling of a crawling sound when I put my head on my pillow. If you think of it your head has alot of pressure built up depending on weather, activity, severity of syptoms ect.. It is most likely from the Chiari.

A lot of times I feel like there is a whooshing type noise in my ear. I also sometimes have ringing but the whooshing is more frequent.

Yea, that ringing thing is annoying at times, but I think I hear it so much that i'm used to it already. It sucks but so far i'm learning to live with it.

Hey Wendyanne,

Just recently I've been hearing a heartbeat in my ears. So far it's only while I lie down. I try not to sleep on my sides just due to the fact it bugs ya know. I never thought about build up. It does make sense. Thanks.

I found my Chiari from being dx with Geniculate Neuralgia. I had ice pick stabbing pain for four years before they found my CM. I totally understand what you are talking about.

I deal with the ringing in the ear off and on still, even after the decompression surgery...but when the weather changes and the air pressure is different, I noticed that there is something seperate from the ringing...like what you're saying..I think of it like a pressure sound...It's only in the colder times for me.. what about you? Have you found relief with the warmer day(s)? I keep thinking it'll get better with the Spring :)

i get the ringing in the ear once in a while and i got this stuff called ring relief and it seemed to help

Seabrooks,

I've never thought about it when it comes to whether. I always thought the sound may be caused by stress. I did go to the ENT and she told me that it may be due to build up or something like that. To be honest with you I am not well educated on this chiari thing =( . I've only noticed the sound recently cuz it still trips me out. In the past I've heard it for about 3 months straight and I lost SO much sleep. How did you deal with it?

Mitzi, does the ringing completely stop or do you hear it here and there after taking RING RELIEF? Are there any side effects?

I started using a heating pad...whenever I hit the bed. I also have this large alterantive down pillow that we bought and smoothed out the stuffing to create a flat surface in the middle and sewed it so that it sort looks like one of those travel neck pillows that I sleep on to keep the pressure off my neck. I noticed that pressure issue has eased off since incorporating these measures. It's gotten better on those rare warm days we've had - bring on Spring! I'm ready to test this theory!
