Dr. Tew wants me to do a plant based diet, anyone have any suggestions on how to begin that? He wants me to get with a nutritionist as well as a personal trainer, but being unemployed with no income I can not afford to hire either one. I do have a juicer, so I have started doing a little juicing, but any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
As in vegetarian? You might want to watch Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead or Forks Over Knives for guidance. They are avaialble on Netflix.
I've heard other chiari docs recommend the paleo diet to reduce inflammation. I've not heard much about plant based diets.
I have watched the Fat, Sickly, & Nearly Dead Documentary at the library, don't have netflix, my counselor that I am seeing recommend that one and that is what inspired me that I need to start actually doing the juicing. I have been thinking about doing it for a while, but was too lazy to dig out the juicer from the McGee closet.
What is the Paelo diet, not sure I have heard of that one.
My biggest thing is how do you get started? I am a little bit of a picky eater to begin with and not a lot of will power when it comes to certain foods that I like.
Paleo is no grains, no legumes, and no dairy. You are encouraged to eat meat (grass-fed/organic if possible), fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. I am trying to follow this minus the no dairy because I can't do without whole milk in my coffee and cheese...just can't! lol. I am already gluten free (no wheat, rye, or barley) because of celiac disease.
To get started I would try to find the foods on the diet that you do like and focus on those, maybe adding in something you don't really care for but can tolerate each week...after a few weeks you may find your tastes of changed and the old favorites don't sound as good. We hope so anyhow! :)
I love my juicer. If you add an apple a half a lemon (little sour) and a stalk of celery you can adds all kinds of great veggies and it taste good. Carrot, kale, beet, spinach a little ginger.
If your picky just start off slow. How ever much you use it is better than not using it.
I just read that the Olympic athlets are all drinking beet juice by the gallon because it's suppose to help naturally send more oxygen to the muscles. It started out with the ski teams at the winter games and now all the athlets are doing it. They say it taste like "sweet dirt" Maybe if you drink it by itself. I really like it but it could be an aquired taste. It does make your pee pink!
The other thing is if your not crazy about some veggies roasting them brings out their natural sugars and makes them yummy. You can look on web for recipies but carrots, beets, squash, onions ect.. You just toss with a little olive oil and salt and pepper roast in oven or wrap in foil on grill. You can eat with rice and it is delicious!
Good luck...Let us know how your making out.

I totally agree with the Paleo diet. I've found a natural epi-paleo & ketogenic diet is optimal for me. Epi-paleo is a natural fish, seafood, & meat diet w/seasonal carbohydrate intake. I've tried a plant based diet 10yrs ago and became sicker and sicker; I was bloated & had weight gain. Paleo-keto makes a huge difference in my quality of life. This has worked better than any pills, treatments, or surgery for my chiari symptoms.
