As someone who was recently diagnosed, my parents are now harrassing me to get back to work, which I can understand since I've been without work for over a year now, but I find that I lack the energy to do even the simple tasks of things around the house. So for those that are able to work, is your boss/company aware of your problems, and for those that don't work, if you don't mind me asking how are you able to support yourselves? Do we qualify for any sort of disability income?
Hi, I am married with 3 children, I am on SSDI, but not for chiari, I too was recently diagnosed but have had problems since childhood. So between SSDI, housing support, and my husband working we are doing well. Just to let you know, SSDI denies EVERYONE, so if you wind up needing to do that just get one of those lawyers that only get paid if you get paid, it took me about 2 years to get approved. Once in front of the judge it took him all of about 5 min to approve me, as he could clearly see I needed it. You are approved on an individual basis, is it something that is so debilitating that you cant work at all is what they will look at. Hope this helps a bit
Before my I was diagnosed, I worked full time for an energy management company (in a client support position), went to school, volunteered, etc. In June I was suddenly ill and that's when I got diagnosed with Chiari. The doctors took away my driving and work privileges... My work has a short- and long-term disability program so I'm (supposedly - still waiting for the full payment) getting paid through that. I'm also applying for SSDI because I know it'll take a long time to get approved, if I get approved at all. I'd like to go back to work but not like this. Waiting for a fourth opinion from Seattle on the possibility of surgery there. You have options, it just takes time and good investigation skills. :)
Apply for SSDI as quickly as you can. Also breakdown all problems that you are having and be as detailed as possible. When I applied I put down all ailments and provided documentation for all my hospitalizations. I know SSDI is on a case by case basis but was surprised how quickly it came through. Apply for it but the key is how many hours you are working also. If they see you bringing in a sufficient amount of income you will be denied.
Thank you all very much for all your help. At least I can start to plan out a schedule of things that I have to do. My meeting with my doctor is on the 30th. I'll bring it up to him then and see what he says.
I Have a "Special Preview Announcement". I cannot give any specifics for two weeks. Please give me two weeks & I have an incredible opportunity for Ben's Friends Members regarding Employment. It will not even take 1 cent from your SSD or SSSI benefits. That is about all I can say, but know two very special people have worked 1000's of hours to make this a successful program and partner with a special group of people. To help our Members with employment issues. Two Weeks. I Promise !!!
I am so excited I have been about to explode for over a month because I know how important this will be to us all.
Thanks,
Tracy Z.
