My mom told me today that her friend saw something about those with Chiari Malformation should NOT use the smaller Fluzone Intradermal flu shot. Her friend said she thought of me, but couldn't remember why they said not to use it. Does anyone have any input?
There are neurological risks with any of the flu shots. When you get oe you have to sign that you are aware of that. I don't know anything specifically about the Fluzone Intradermal flu shot though.
Great link explaining why children with CM should not take Fluzone.

This is very important for pediatric chiarians !!!!
There is a FANTASTIC Homeopathic flue remedy that they sell everywhere...CVS, Walgreens ect... It's Occicilium. They are homeopathic pellets that you put under your tongue. They are tiny tubes and you take a half a tube twice a day at the first sign of flu. It kicks your bodies natural healing properties into gear to fight the flu with no side effects and no drug interactions. We buy a box at the beginning af winter just incase and put it in our medicine chest. It immediately starts to lessen the body aches, fever ect.. that comes with the flu. You take it 2 times a day for the first few days.Sometimes you only need one or two doses. It shortens the duration and severity of the flu. It is also handy to have in case you start to feel "Flu like" and it's not exactly the flu. Chills, muscle aches fever ect... It works great.
My two cents... : )

Thanks ladies!!!
Jenn,
I will check with a hospital pharmacist friend & my NS tomorrow about the shot & spray, both for adults and children. That is a very major concern. I have personally discussed this with pre or non Surgical & post Surgical Chiarians and they have all told me they have been made sick by the shots. I know I will never take one again. I will let you know what I find out tomorrow. Thank you for bringing this up so we all will know if there is a danger.
I’d like to know too. My son has asthma and so I’m required to get it! I had my surgery 9 months ago. Thanks!!
ok...I have a NS, Two Pharmacists & a Neurological Research Assistant researching this issue. They all said they would get back with me on Monday. It's funny in a sad way, the Pharmacists have never heard of Chiari Malformations. They do have medical databases though, so maybe they will also learn something & be able to help us.
I finally got responses from everyone. The specialists told me the same thing. The flu shot or the flu nasal spray is safe for Adults & Children Chiarians. Your Chiari symptoms may get a little worse for a few days but it will not have any other adverse affects. It doesn't matter if you have been decompressed or not. Just don't take the flu shot if you have an egg allergy.
Thanks guys,
Tracy Z.
