Hi everyone! I have a Nerve Conduction Study/EMG coming up in 2 weeks, and from what my doctor said is it can be pretty painful. Can anyone give me some advice on what to expect? The closer its getting the more nervous I'm getting about it :-/
Hi Beeba, My NS is mostly sure that my symptoms are from Chiari, but he wants to rule out any other possibilities. I guess he wants to make sure there aren't any chickens mixed in with the ducks that might not get heard because the ducks quack so loud. Unfortunately I won't see him again until after the test, so I guess I'll painfully suffer through it.
I saw a new NL yesterday and she scheduled me for an EMG. I have the same feeling as Beeba! I have Chiari, was decompressed and still have issues. They/I know there is weakness in my arms and left leg. What the h3ll is this test going to prove to them? It's not like they can fix the damage anyway. I am very upset. I have been put through the wringer before and after surgery and I am just so tired of Chiari pain, procedure pain and treatment pain. When will it stop?! I have a SSD hearing in March and after that is over, I am going to take a vacation from these damn doctors. I can't take it anymore. It causes so much anxiety just thinking about an upcoming appt! Oh....and the BOTOX still hasn't really kicked in!!! So, 37 needles for WHAT??? Sorry, just so frustrated right now!!!
I had an EMG when I was first diagnosed by the NL. It was kind of uncomfortable for me but not too painful. It really didn't seem to accomplish much...the NL was just insisting that chiari didn't cause symptoms and that we needed this to check for carpal tunnel and something else. When I finally got to a NS he didn't even ask if I'd had the test done.
Sometimes a Thoracic Outlet will cause neck , shoulder and arm pain. That's what thy used to see what was causing all my pain. Then I had ablation therapy to deaden the nerves.

Sorry if I misled anyone on the pain! I guess I should say if it was uncomfortable for me then it will probably be painful for you! I don't want to scare anyone just give you the info you need to brace yourself. At any rate you'll get through it and I hope it gives your doctor some answers!
I had this done and I’m sorry to say, it Sucked Royally!! It’s a weird pain. It’s not like an “injury” pain. It’s all internal. I’m so sorry you have to go through it. Don’t forget, we’re all in this together.
Well, its over, and it was horrible! I had some interesting reactions that had the NL running the test baffled. When they poked me in the hip/groin area it felt like I was being stabbed in the left side of my thigh, and the pain lingered. When they sent the shock through my ankle, they were shocking one side, but i felt terrible pain on the opposite side. So weird. So, we'll see what the report says and what my NS says when I go back to him on the 21st. Thanks for the support everyone!!!
Well, during the EMG, the NL conducting it said he was baffled, and that my reactions were not normal, but I just got a copy of the report and it says everything was NORMAL! WTH????? During the test he said I was a unique case and he doesn't know what to make of me! And the report is NORMAL???? Something doesn't seem right! I have an initial appointment with a NL on the 20th, and a follow up with my NS on the 21st. I WILL be sure to inform him COMPLETELY unlike the NL. NL's are idiots when it comes to Chiari. The only thing hopeful that I have is the person in the NL office that I'm seeing is a PA. I seem to have great luck with PA's. I'll keep ya all updated! And as always, thanks for the prayers, support, and words of encouragement! Love ya all!!! :-)
