Last night I had a severe migraine and ended up in the ER. This morning I had a tingling feeling on the left side of my face, head, hand and leg. Now my husband brings up that I'm stuttering really bad and having problems with saying basic things. Even now while I type this I'm having trouble finding the right word. It's almost like I had a mini-stroke. My face is still drooping on the left. I've had this happen with a migraine before but the speech issues are concerning me. Should I see if it goes away on it's own? Should I be concerned? Has anyone else had this happen?
I have heard of this stuff happening with migraines but you need to get checked by a Dr to make sure you get a proper diagnosis.
:-)
I had a bad migraine yesterday too: I think it's the weather changes here on the East Coast!
Please let us know how you are today!
Still stuttering and having trouble finding words. I'm thinking the last migraine was due to weather changes too. It started snowing yesterday. As for the going to the doctor, appointment has been made

I talked with someone from the nurse help line today. Luckily the only problem with speech today was tight vocal cords so I wasn't stuttering. She told me to be on the look out for muscle weakness since I can still use the left side but it feels like it fell asleep. My appointment is towards the end of next month but I am going to call on Monday to see if there is any way to possibly have it pushed forward because of the developments that have come up. When I do go into the ER here luckily they have a PA-C who has taken classes on migraine headaches and Chiari so she's awesome and has done a lot of work on the side to make sure the other doctors and PA-Cs know what Chiari is since there seems to be a pocket of us here in the Spokane Valley.

Hi, this is concerning because of the face drooping and speech problems, how soon is your doctor's appointment? Did the nurse tell you what things to watch out for, or things that you should go directly to the ER for? Do you have access to a nurse's line to give them your symptoms and find out the best course of action? Sorry for all of the questions, just worried. I grew up not too far away from Spokane, so I know that they are the trauma center for a substantial area, but I wouldn't expect them to be knowledgeable with Chiari. Most places are not knowledgeable about Chiari unfortunately :(
Best wishes,
Mandy
This is definitely very serious and you could have possibly had a stroke, Did they do a MRI or CT Scan while you were in the ER? I have Hemiplegic Migraines but they do not have lasting symptoms but can cause a stroke. You really need to be seen you should not have had facial paralysis and speech issues after the headache is gone.
They didn't do any scans or anything.

I am so sorry. Please let us know after you call the Dr. on Monday, what they say. Tell them exactly what happened and you are afraid you had a TIA or stroke and need to be seen. Everytime I go to the ER even for a headache they do a CT Scan or MRI. You have had some nerve damage if your face feels like that. Please tell them the next time you think you have had a stroke. I still can't believe they didn't do any diagnostics while you were in the ER.
Since the migraine is back I may just go to the ER tomorrow if the speech, vocal cord tightness, and facial weakness continue or get worse and tell them. The last time they did a scan of any kind was almost a month ago and these new symptoms have started in the last week.
this is something I just went through in November. was rushed to er thinking I was having a stroke, was a migraine. was told to follow up with ns within two weeks, got there and was told to have surgery within month but can’t afford to have surgery. hoping it doesn’t happen again. hope you feel better soon.
Hello don’t mean to scare you but I had been having the same symptoms for years and finally went to the ER to find out I had chiari 1 and a left temporal lobe cavernoma of the brain. The temporal lobe is a twisting of blood vessels in your brain into a ball. On the MRI you can see the ball and where I had a old bleed. I was told you had a bleed but some how it healed its self. By the grace of God your here. I did research and found out the symptoms of when it bleeds. They are onset of forgetting thing words etc… one girl couldn’t remember her qwn name. Seizures and or stroke. Stroke has the weakness and tingling on one side etc. So don’t wait.
I too have this except for the face drooping, but it normally eases after a few days.
If your symptoms do not end or ease, please call your doctor ASAP.
Years ago my mother in law had Bell's Palsy. She had to go to the ER a few times before a doctor diagnosed her. It seemed to come and go for about 20 years, but the past few years, it's not bothered her at all.
I hope you are keeping a symptom diary. If I don't write something down, I will forget.
Hey, I can relate to that pretty well, I was diagnosed with hemiplegic migraine (which as far as I can tell has identical issues to chiari but apparently I have both) I’ve had the same problem with speech that you’re describing, I have to think a few lines ahead and hope the conversation goes that way. However if you find it doesn’t improve in a day or two or gets noticeably worse I’d call your ns just so he’s aware of it. I find that panic makes it worse, I know that doesnt help much because I know it’s damn near impossible NOT to panic when this happens. Tiredness can also make it worse and you’ve had a pretty traumatic few hours, I was told I’d had a stroke when I had my accident and I remember the fear and desperate panic so I’d recommend a duvet day with some good movies, I really hope you feel better, I’ll be thinking of you and I hope you have a marvelous Christmas
feel better soon.
I have severe hemiplegic migraines, with many of these symptoms and more. However if headaches change in any way see your neurologist immediately to rule out stroke and the really bad things.
I managed to get in sooner to see my neurologist so I'll be seeing him in the beginning part of Janurary instead of the end like I was planning on. Luckily my PCP and PMS (pain management specialist) got me on an at home version of what they have been doing in the ER but can be done at home. Today was day 1 of it and it seems to have done the trick. Killed the migraine and I laid down to wake up in no pain.
Let me know how your appt goes. I have had symptoms like these for years. I went to the er once because I thought I might be having a stroke as well. I didn't know I had Chiari then. I asked them to do a MRI and they refused! I have since been put on Indral and it seems to have helped a bit but I am still symptomatic. I have read that hemiplegic migraine can cause a stroke as well. I do suffer from permanent numbness in my left arm (even after discectimy & fusion)...
I hope you feel better soon.
There is a condition called apraxia that fits the description that you have provided. It can be caused by stroke or mini stroke , my speech therapist told me that mine (apraxia) was primaily caused by a ministroke and she also told me to expect some complications due to the CM.. If it turns out to be apraxia, a speech therapist can assist. I have been diagnosed with apraxia it is difficult to live with but it can be overcame. here are a few links on apraxia

I forgot to say that if you have to go through speech therapy, it is a lot of repetition. and as I did not read all of the comments due to my eyes being buggy today, i apologize if I repeated som information
The funny thing about this is today I have no symptoms of any speech issues at all. It comes and goes and I've noticed that it seems to happen more often when I have an increase of pressure (ears feeling full, ringing, etc). I did manage to become enough of a thorn in my neurologists side for him to go on ahead and order the MRI and scheduled them for next week so I'll at least be getting that done sooner than first expected. I've worked with people who had apraxia and I actually brought that up to my neurologist when I called him yesterday and today. I think in one way he likes having someone who worked in healthcare as a patient but in another way I know I'm a nightmare to deal with when I want answers and am told to wait.

Hello, Scoopl 1986,
I have just been diagnosed, and had the migraine, with my right side tinggling along with double vision. My double vision has gotten better, but they gave me medicine for it. It seems that Chiari is a whole lot of different symptoms and doctors just do not have enough information to let us know what to expect next. I am finding that out. I am starting to fell pain in my joints and finding myself with problems getting up and taking my first steps at times. The best thing is to talk to the doctor they may have a medicine that can help. Emergency doctors will only give you pain relief.
That's the number one problem is that Chiari presents itself in so many different ways and in different times of life that there is almost no single symptom (other than the migraines) that a majority of those suffering with it have.

Chicka- I have double vision as well. There are prism lenses which can help that. I visited my eye Dr. for a comprehensive exam. Sometimes they can see nerve damage and pressure issues as well.
