Restrictions post surgery

I had decompression surgery 10+ years ago and am doing great. I am curious though, are there any long term restrictions for activities I can participate in? Is one able to ride roller coasters, water/snow ski, scuba dive, distance running and other sports, etc. etc. What were you told by your doctors? What have been your personal experiences?

I have no idea, but I’m happy you’re doing great!!

Hello,

You should definitely ask your doctor since we are all different. I can share my own experience...

I had decompression surgery with C1 through C4 fusion and adontoid removal about 6 years ago. I am very active - I run 5 and 10Ks, I run mud runs, I ride rollercoasters, I love spinning, yoga, boxing, kickboxing and all sorts of workouts. I am doing GREAT!!! The only 2 things I am afraid to do again are: skydiving and skiing. With skiing...I have a fear of falling on my head or neck...I don't think I'll ski anymore just to be safe. Sounds like you are doing very well yourself! :)

Thank you! Did your doctor give you the ok for these things? I haven’t seen my doctor in years!

Oh - and do any if these things make you dizzy or any side effects?

I was told absolutely no Amusement Park Rides especially Roller Coasters and no SCUBA Diving. These were previous Discussions about restrictions post surgical.

Hope these help,

My doctor told me I had NO restrictions, but please remember we are all different with different cases. Wishing you well! :)

Thank you. I live near Kings Island, an amusement park in Ohio. There is a coaster I have aching to ride with my family. I finally did it today - THREE TIMES! So far so good.

I have read to avoid all those things but my sons neurosurgeon said he cannot live in a bubble and to go by how he feels. Take precautions and absolutely no impact sports.

Oh and he did ok my son to ski, with a helmet of course, but I was a crazy mess while he was skiing :). So hard to be a parent of a 16 year old that thinks he is invincible

I, personally would not ride a roller coaster & I was furious when my daughter (who had Chiari surgery & tethered cord surgery less than a year ago) came home and said that she rode one!!

She seems okay & didn't have any problems. But I still wouldn't ride roller coasters.
