Questions about problems with meningitis

My Son Aidan had surgery on December 5th for his decompression to treat his Chiari 1 Malformaiton. Everything went fine with no problems. He ran a fever a week ago, and we all assumed the doctor got a false negative for the flu since everyone in the family ended up with it 2 weeks ago. However, now he is running a fever again (around 102 degrees F). He is complaining that his neck is hurting which he has not done since the surgery. I was just worried about possible meningitis. I have a call into his neuerosurgeon however, there is no telling how soon they will get back with me. I was just unsure if infection could set in there if he did get sick. Other who have surgery has that risk. I am just worried. I normally would not be since I have 3 little boys. I really don't get tore up over much, but this is bothering me for some reason.

Thanks for any help

Kathy

Hi,

I hope and pray he just has something going around. I can only imagine how scared you must be. If the NS doesn't call take him to the ER . Usually Meningitis after decompression surgery is due to a CSF Leak. I had Meningitis & was hospitalized for three weeks. Is he complaining of light sensitivity? Or problems turning his head? Please keep us posted. We really do care about how your son & you are doing !!!

Tracy

Kathy,

I will definitely keep him in my prayers. Hopefully, it isn't anything serious. I will tell you that twice I have been hospitalized for what they thought was meningitis or meningicoccal disease. On both occaisions it was not. To this day, I still do not know what I had, why I was so sick or why I ran such a high fever. They tested me for EVERYTHING they could think of. Hopefully, they will find an answer for you but they may not.

I don't blame you for being upset and worried. That's a normal response for a caring Mom.

Keep us updated and we will keep him in our prayers.

I hope you get some answers... I too had meningitis due to a CSF leak following my surgery and was in and out of the hospital a total of 4 weeks.... Meningitis is nothing to mess around with and I agree with Tracy if you NS's office does not get back to you I would take him to the ER... It's better to get things caught and treated as soon as possible..

Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find out!

I was born with meningitis. I agree with everyone else. I would take him to the ER if the Dr does not get back to you. I hope its nothing serious. Keep us posted and praying for him.
