Opening the dura

The doctor who is doing Sophia's surgery will open the dura and leave it open with no patch. Has anyone had the surgery and not had the patch? If so, how are you doing?

Everything I read says that the leaving the dura open is done only in a few places. Most centers when they open the dura apply the patch.

Our doctor has had success with leaving the dura open.

wow very interesting to read! my NS left my dura open and didnt out a patch over it and I too have a pseudmeningcele and Im really sufferring!!!! so which tecnique is the best to close the dura or leave it open???? all so confusing

Sofias mommy, this is only my humble opinion. I have raised 2 chiari kids. I went with conservative surgery. The NS did a bony decompression & c1 only, without duraplasty. Your daughter is young and she may need further surgery in her lifetime, they can always open the dura later if needed. You may want to ask about this. It worked well with no further surgery, now my children are 26 & 31yo.

Adria, are they going to fix your pseudo or are they going to leave it? I hope they fix mine,

I'm going back there this week, its a very long trip that I've been hoping to avoid. Now with my hearing problems I cannot fly. The nurse called yesterday and said I could try to wrap it. I did that last night and had a much better sleep and less morning headache. NS was talking to the nurse about a possible shunt but I'm not having it. We'll see what he says in person.

I sure hope they have a better plan for you! Usually diamox and steroids are considered a temp fix.

I hope for your sake they help you,do u get a tightening at the back of your head? like the skin is being streched? makes me feel sick when mine does, surely thats the pressure from the pusedo?.I can understand why u dont wamt a shunt,I dont either.Just want to try the dura repair first to see if it works but my NS said the repair op can lead to syrinx? so made need a shunt at a later date if that happens. All the best for next week, please keep me updated, thinking of you,
