Nausea

First let me start with I do not know all of the correct terms. My daughter was diagnosed with Chiari in 2011 and had decompression surgery in August. She has suffered from severe nausea her entire life. We have been through many gastrointestinal doctors and tests over the years and never coming up with a reason for the nausea until now. During the surgery we found out that she has a misplaced artery. Because this artery is misplaced every time it pulses it bumps the "vomit center" and is more than likely the cause of her nausea.

My questions for everyone are - Does anyone else suffer from this or have children that suffer from this? What helps you or your kids?

We are thinking of going the acupuncture route because it can help with nausea, sleep problems and headaches.

Any help you can give would be most appreciated!! Thanks!!

I do believe it is rare, but for some reason it appears with Chiari (in some patients). If they attempt to move the artery they can cause more damage than good. For instance she could end up where she vomits ALL the time instead of just being nauseous. So they leave it where it is. I will continue to keep you updated....and I will certainly let everyone know if acupuncture is helpful.

Sisk, I’m am so sorry your daughter is going through this, and you too. I think acupuncture is a great idea to try! Also, how is her heart rate?

Just another quick suggestion, did u get a second opinion from a great Pediatric Vascular NS about removal. That seems like a lot to live with, especially for a young child. Hope the acup. works for now, but I believe they have these sub sub NS who deal with arteries there all day.

Thanks so much for the suggestion of the Pediatric Vascular NS...did not think about that avenue. Will definitely look into that.

She has POTS and is currently on Florinef prescribed by her Electrophysiology Cardiologist. Since being decompressed the meds help a lot more than they did prior to the surgery, but there are still names she gets light headed and dizzy when she stands too quickly.

I feel so bad for her having to live with this everyday and just not wanting to be a normal high school senior. Luckily she has decided to stay home and go to community college for two years before heading away from home. I would be worried sick about her if she wasn't at home with all the medical problems.

Thanks so much for all of the great suggestions!! Hugs to you all!!
