How long after surgery do these pounding headaches last?!?!?

I had decompression surgery a week ago tomorrow. I keep getting horrendous pounding headaches at least 1 time a day. Usually they happen when I am about 2 hours away from my next dose of fioracet (that’s the drug that gives me the most relief). Yesterday when I got the headaches they made me actually throw up- which was a very scary thing. I actually felt better while in the hospital. It was much easier for them to treat the headaches without letting them get out of hand.
My questions are… is this normal? And how long is this going to last. Also, I don’t seem to have much of an appetite.

Thanks for the advice Abby. I am using ice right now. It does seem the lessen the intensity. I am having a hard time eating. Every time I eat I feel nauseated. I going to try soups and jello today. And I am waiting for the dr to return my call, maybe they can change my medications or something.

I had the head aches after surgery, they lasted a good 3/4 weeks (sorry) I found it better to keep away from Tv, phones, ipad, radio etc etc kept my eyes closed as much as possible. They were also made worse by lights of any kind. I bought a eye mask to sleep in which helped a lot and also helped to get away from light during the day. I also had zero appetite for a good month. Appetite totally back to normal now, also no headaches!! Chiari or otherwise!

Hope this helps and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Laura

Hang in there! I’m sorry you are in so much pain.

I have been much better! I called the dr and they made some adjustments to my medicines and it made a world of difference. For the first time since surgery I actually had an appetite and ate more than a few bites. I am hoping to continue on this path. I feel really. Really tired, but so much better. And I know to keep resting. I’m sitting on my couch working a puzzle with my sister right now.

Dear Hayperk,

I hope you are starting to feel better. My decompression was Jan. 6th. The headaches and vomiting generally subsided by one week post-op; however, I do still experience some head/neck/scalp pain and and have vomited/dry heaved a few times. It is very rare though. I rarely need my Tylenol #3, but do take my Phenergan sometimes for nausea. I also still get dizzy when standing sometimes; however, that may be my fault because I'm probably not getting up as much as I should.

I hope you find relief soon. If you don't please call your surgeon. I'll be praying for you.

Great to hear!

I am glad you are feeling better and they were able to adjust your meds!

:-)
