After surgery eating,

I had surgery on the 21 of feb. 2012, and ever since everytime i eat i get bad intergestion and my food stays in my chest forever, is this normal after the surgery! Don't know if i should be concerned but i can't seem to eat and have peace anymore since the surgery, any suggestions or has any of you experienced this after your surgery?

Did they do a swallowing test after surgery? It's supposed to be done before you go home from the hospital. You may even have a Hiatal Hernia. I would definitely get it checked out. I have swollowing problems, not to be gross, but I have to vomit to get rid of everything. I really hope you get to the bottom of what's going on.

No they didn't do that. I did throw up sunday before i went home, but i never was like this before the surgery. I'm going to call the clinic in the morning and check on it. Cause it's really getting aggrevating. How long has it been since you have had the surgery.

Hi Amanda. How are you doing today? Did you call the clinic today? Not loving the intergestion you're experiencing. You know, you only had your surgery a week ago. Eat very light and small meals. It may be that you're eating too big a meal or binding foods. Remember, anesthesia slows everything down, including digestion. Always take sips of water or whatever drink you enjoy while you eat, it helps move things along. Let us know how you're doing.

My surgery was 9/26/2005. I also had to have a rebuilt cervical spine, because they found my CM too late & the CSF was literally pushing my C Spine out of my spinal column. Please don't worry just because I have swallowing problems after this long you will too. My case was very extreme. I am sure you are just healing. Take it slow. I had to take pills while swallowing pudding to get them to go down. Please let us know how you are doing!!!

I called the clinic and they told me to take zantac and as long as I'm not choking and not being able to swallow i should be ok, but if i start choking and not being able to swallow then come to the er. I just hate feeling like this and wasn't sure if it was normal after surgery, i hope it passes soon, thanks for the support, I'm still new and learning about all this. Its comforting to know there are others that can relate and know how you feel!

Amanda,
Unfortunately I think what you are experiencing is fairly normal. I went through the same thing after surgery. I`ve always had swallowing issues and severe acid reflux, but it was worse after surgery. Prilosec OTC is what I added to my prescription GERD meds and it’s always helped. I agree with Katie…lots of fluids. I used to do a lot of Popsicles and that helped too.
Keep us posted and take care of yourself.

I couldn’t eat for days after my surgery. I felt nauseous daily for a couple weeks after with or without food,
I recommend drinking ginger ale and eating saltines in a slow pace.
Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Thanks guys, it's getting a little better, I'm still taking the zantac everyday so the eating is getting better. Just still feeling very drained and not sleeping well, but i guess with time that will pass too! I go Wed.. March 7 to the wound center for them to check my stitches and see if they are going to take them out or what! Thanks for all the support, just havn't been on in few days, havn't felt like doing much.

Some meds can constipate you, but if u eat Hemp Hearts (available online or at health food stores), it will soften your stool naturally and help, plus they taste good, kind of like sunflower seeds.

Hi......

Good luck on the 7th.....let us know how you make out, ok????

In thought and prayer,

Lori

Ps: Thanks Jet for the tip on Hemp Hearts....have to check it out...thanks!!
