Difficulty Swallowing

Hey everyone, i'm wondering if other people have experienced this...I thought i was keeping a cold at bay and just having a swollen throat when it dawned on me that I've had a swollen feeling throat for about 5 weeks now and it never turns into a cold. so i went to my doctor and had a Barium Swallow test done. just waiting to hear back on the results. anybody else have difficulty swallowing? If so, is it certain textures or thicknesses?

Ramona, I have the swallowing difficulty and some choking too. Ironically for me the choking is not so much with food as with liquid and my own spit. With food, though, I have to swallow a few times to get it down.

That sounds very similar to me. I have to chew solid food very very we’ll before I am able to swallow it and liquids, like a puréed soup are a challenge. Have u ever had a swallowing test done? What does your NS about this?

I also have swallowing issues and the barium swallow test came back with no issues seen.

I have had more swallowing problems since surgery, mine may be caused by damage to the Vegas nerve,I have had, swallowing, gagging and breathing issues. My throat has closed as if I’m smothering this is only happened a few times,it’s very scary when it feels as if the air is cut off.I am out 1 yr.since decompression and also dealing with dysautonomia and it may be the reason for these symptoms, look up the info.on this condition also.

Usually swallowing problems come post surgical with CM. I have dysphagia and have had a rebuilt C Spine then C5 Discectomy & fused C6. My swallowing problems are post surgical. I know you must be uncomfortable & I am very sorry. I hate to get chocked several times a week and have to be careful about what I eat.staying hydrated helps. Please let us know how your tests go.

Staying hydrated is definitely something I stay on top of. It helps a lot with the headaches. First thing I do even before I get out of bed in the morning is have a drink Of water! Thanks for all the responses. I have been diagnosed with CM 1 for about 1.5 years but until now I haven’t really been on here much. When I was diagnosed my son was 6 months old so I really did not have the time or energy for “me” stuff. But I need to start paying attention to myself more. My son is 2 yrs old now so it’s a bit easier. I haven’t heard anything from the Doctor on the swallowing test. If I don’t hear anything Monday I think I will call Tuesday.
