2 weeks post op & started leaking CSF

Spent the night last night in the ER. Had my stitches removed on Wed & last night I started leaking CSF. They had to stitch me back up. Anybody else have that problem?

While I was there I found out I was allergic to lidocaine. When the ER doc numbed me I started feeling faint. Then I couldn't swallow. My heart was racing & my BP went up to 194/130 (I usually run about 115/80). I could barely speak because my tongue swelled up & the room was spinning. It was a horrible experience. I feel like I just took 3 giant steps back. I was feeling so good.

I had a CSF Leak when I had Micro Vascular Decompression surgery on Cranial Nerves 4, 5, 7. They broke my Mastoid Bone & it filled with CSF & was leaking in my mouth. Definitely not fun. I developed Meningitis from the leak. Did they tell you to lay on you back flat for two weeks? If you had a duraplasty what did they use as a patch?

So sorry to hear this! Unfortunately, fluid under the incision is not an uncommon thing. Laying flat increases intracranial pressure which is probably why your NS wants you on an incline. We bought our daughter a pillow wedge which helps immensely. Did they do a catscan? Good luck on Monday and keep us posted.

Ugh, how horrible! I'm sorry to hear about your setback... My dad learned he was allergic to the "-caine" family while he was in the hospital, too. Apparently in our case it's a genetic thing, so I have to take care in the future to let doctor's know. I really hope things start picking up for you. Take it easy and know there are people out there rooting for you!

The wedge pillow was the NL suggestion. Got mine at Bed Bath & Beyond for $30. How are you feeling otherwise? Wishing you the best!

I didn't know the name of it, but reading the description, yep that's what it is. The doctor described it as his blood not transferring oxygen to his body.

I had Novocaine prior to discovering my dad's intolerance so we're pretty sure I'm okay. I just have to remember to mention it, just in case.

7thhousedoula,

By chance do you have malignant hyperthermia in your family?

Definitely. Thanks Susan. :)

Make sure you mention it. I have several family members who had reactions before we were able to put a name on it.

Oh Becki, I am so sorry for this set back for you- having to sleep straight up must be so hard. Please hang in there- it will get better! Much love! Nicole
