Thooughts?

I met with the new Neurologist today. Very personable and after my exam she said that all my symptoms fit the Migraine diagnosis so she increased my Gapaentin and is ordering physical therapy. She also noted that even though my flow was diminished that the NS noted he did not recommend surgery because he didn't think it would help with the headaches(one of my numerous symptoms, definitely the most constant). I meet with him for a follow up on Thursday.

I did ask if lack of flow could cause damage and she said no, but it may cause symptoms. I asked about what to do to regain my energy and lifestyle, and she suggested I talk to the PT about exercises to build up my stamina and tolerance. Does this make sense? I am not overweight, I am as active as I can tolerate although not anywhere where I was three years ago. I do my squats, crunches (sort of if I can), push ups (usually regreatably). I am not looking to run a marathon or even a 5 K. I am looking to play with my children unhindered. 10 minutes of frisbee this weekend was a mistake.

She did say the only 'fix' for flow is surgery, but does anyone else have suggestions? Type of PT?

Thank you,

My NS also told me surgery may not stop the headaches. However he also warned for me to watch if other symptoms got worst, especially fine motor skills. One of the side effects can be paralysis. If my symptoms progressed to that point I would need surgery. If surgery was not done in a timely manner the paralysis could be permanent. Recently I started losing strength in my arm, so he immediately recommended surgery. You may want to get another opinion. It is hard knowing which doctors to believe because there is so much conflicting info. Are there any Chiari specialist in your area?

This is his area of specialty. Although not a spcialist per sey. He has done surgery recently on another chiarian that I have met. So I know he isn't opposed ot surgery. My main concerns are the vision and stiffness, balance issues and general fatigue from the constant pain. I feel myself being self isolated for fear that the excitement of events will be too much. This is NOT me! I was a multi tasker extrordinaire and now I get lost in the grocery store. But then again 'these aren't from Chiari". At what point will the dr's realize that it's more than a headache. The pain I can tolerate though it's getting worse.

How is the gabapentin working for you? I just started this about 3 weeks ago and it makes me so tired (which I already have issues with). My doctor put me on it for my headaches and "nerve pain" in my hand/arm, but I don't think it's helping. Just curious.....
