Surgery

I'm getting surgery June 2. After multiple tests, finally had a Cine MRI done at IU Health, which apparently has more testing equipment. I got a look at my test results before the doctor got around to looking at it.

My test results:

Low position of the right cerebellar tonsils which extend 8 mm below the foramen magnum.

The left cerebellar tonsils are within normal limits, approximately 4 mm below the foramen magnum.

CSF flow imaging demonstrates severe focal obstruction of CSF flow anteriorly and posteriorly at the foramen magnum and inferiorly there is evidence of aliasing in the anterolateral aspect of the foramen magnum which likely indicates flow jets.

Anyone ever had a diagnosis of two different tonsil lengths?

I looked up all the medical terms to get a better understanding, but don't really have one yet. However, Severe Obstruction I can understand!!

I never knew there are TWO tonsils- left and right!! That doesn't show on the MRI.

So now I'm just prepping for surgery. I have all these things to do:

  • Inhale through the tube on a Spirometer and try to meet the level on the gauge. Then cough three times. I have to do this EVERY HOUR!!! This is to help prevent pneumonia post surgery.
  • 5 days pre-surgery: Drink Half carton of Impact Nutrition supplement Six times per day. This drink helps lower chance for infection and helps you get better more quickly after surgery.
  • 3 days pre-surgery: Mupirocin Ointment: This gets swabbed and wiped inside each nostril 3 times per day. It is to prevent Mersa and any other infectious germs.
  • 2 days per-surgery: Hibiclens Body wash. This is so I can be Squeaky Clean before surgery!!
  • Night before Surgery: No food after midnight.
  • Surgery: 5:30 am to hospital.

Hi, Lindy! Yes, there are two tonsils, one for the left part of the brain and one for the right. I have herniation only on the right side and I also got a cine-MRI last week, but don't have the results yet.

Good luck in surgery and have a swift recovery!
