As I mentioned in my short and sweet post yesterday (I was exhausted), I have a surgery date set with Dr. Oro for 10/23. I'm having a very hard time making a decision about how to handle the travel arrangements. In a perfect world where money wasn't an issue, I would want my husband, mom, and children there. I know that the first people I will want to see when I come to are my 3 kiddos - I may want them to leave w/in 5 minutes, but I will NEED to see them. However, for my family of 5 to fly round trip, it will be around $1500. Then there would be the cost of housing and food, plus a rental car. I have found a little house that is 3 minutes away from the hospital that we could rent for the week for a really great price, and I also plan to check on the condo at Strawberry Place. Does anyone have any suggestions on working out these plans based on your own personal experiences? Has anyone ever stayed in the condo at Strawberry Place? Should I bring my children w/ me or just Skype w/ them? I would appreciate any and all input!
Hi Jen.
Did Dr . Oro tell you how long he thought you would be in the hospital after surgery? Most people are in ICU for 1-2 days then in the hospital 4 or 5 days. Some people have a much shorter stay. I personally would recommend you Skype with your children. You are not going to feel well and depending on your surgery you might not look well & it might scare your children. It's impossible to honestly say how well you are going to do. I hope you go home after a couple of days & do wonderful.
Dr Oro did my surgery last year on 9/20. Hard to believe I am almost 1 year post op and feel wonderful.
We flew to CO from TX for surgery. I also wanted my girls with me but realized it would be better for them and me for them to stay home. That way they kept their same schedule and I was able to rest and heal.
We flew in on Monday, Sep 19th and flew home Sept 29th. My surgery was Tues morning and I was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon. I spent Tues night in ICU. The rest of my time recovering was at a local hotel. It was just me and my husband in Colorado. In hindsight, I really think is was best for my girls to not be with us. They didn't have to see me right after surgery and I didn't have to worry about them while I was resting and healing.
I did order them all mother-daughter necklaces that were delivered to them the day of my surgery.
We had a good support group at home that arranged for supper to be brought everyday. They also made sure my girls had rides to all their actvities. My girls ages are 21, 16, 14 and 2 so the oldest was able to stay at the house with them.
Good Luck! Hope you have a successful surgery!
Message me is you have any specific questions.
