Question about Shunt's in a child age 13

Hi Everyone,

I have a question for anyone that can answer it possibly.. My daughter april has now been through 3 brain surgeries due to Chiari Malformation, The first being a decompression, second being where her brain pushed down on her spinal cord and almost caused her to be paralized.. The third one was 7/11/14 and she had a shunt put in (partial shunt) to be exact.

My question is this... Is it possible for a partial shunt to move out of place.. My daughter now has fluid leaking out her incision site and they believe it to be cerebelium fluid. We have been here over the weekend and the problem is her surgeon is coming home from an emergency tomorow and the other doctors dont seem to know a thing..

She is also getting all her old signs back from before the surgery. I am very worried because they did do a cat scan and x-rays but they didnt show the shunt... The technician said that it should have been in the spot she showed me on the screen but i didnt even see it and they x-ray it before we left here 5 days ago.

If this has happend to anyone can you please tell me or if you have heard of this before.. links or anything would be helpfull.

Thanks so much

Debbie :)

Debbay, I’m really sorry your daughter is going through this. I don’t have experience with a shunt, but I know they can move, I just didn’t know they could move that much. You need to get ALL of the radiologists reports for her imaging so you know where the shunt is. Is her surgeon going to see her today? If there is no plan I would start looking for another surgeon who has experience with Chiari kids. Let us know what is happening with her.
