I am 47 and I have had headaches for years, when I get a cough my head pounds and feels like its going to explode, I informed the doctor and he told me it was a symptom of bronchitis! (bearing in mind I had a chest infection as well). I continue to suffer from these headaches! But have no chest problems, I then got told it was migraines and told to take paracetamol! Of which I do often. I also have other symptoms such as neck pain, swallowing problems, dizziness and occasionally insomnia. I didn’t know all these were linked to my condition until recently. I got diagnosed with chari 1 in August 2015. I go to stoke Hospital, I have heard they are really good surgeons. (my mum suffered with brain time most of her life and the surgeons were fantastic with her). I’m very scared , I also was diagnosed with acid reflux witch now turns out to be dyspragia! My fear is if something goes wrong, what will it do to my family? Can I suffer the headaches etc, some days yes others no! My questions are
What are the success rates in this surgery?
Will it improve? Short time or long time?
If anyone could help me, I would appreciate it as I have a preassessment appointment next week and need as much info as possible.
Sorry to hear of another in pain, always am.
If you have the Chiari diagnosis, there are several associated disorders that you should be tested for the most important prior to surgery is EDS ( Ehlers-Danlos syndromes) also full spine MRI to rule out srynx.
Aside from associated disorders the average of improvement is 84%.
We all want the best for our families , if your symptoms don’t remain chronic,it’s possible you could cope with medication to treat symptoms.
Take care.
Thank you chiari73 X I have had full MRI Scan, I do not have srynx, what is EDS? I’m going to hospital on Wednesday to have some tests done then, not sure if this is one of them, I haven’t been told much, think I was in shock as I didn’t take much in at the time. I was also to scared to look it up, but my son and brother encouraged me. I’m glad they did now! The surgeon hasn’t suggested any medication? I just take what my GP perscribes for the different symptoms prior to discovering the chiari. Looks like Ive got along way to go! Hope you are well and coping xxx
