I am just wondering how many of you had tested positive with a Hoffmann's reflex? I am still working on getting a diagnosis.. I have almost all the symptoms of Chiari and they are ordering a brain MRI for me. We have already reviewed a neck MRI. They did the Hoffmann's reflex test and issues had arisen. Is this a normal symptom for Chiari?
Hi
Hoffman's reflex is just one of many reflexes that can emerge when the brain is under stress from whatever source. I do not believe that it is a specific sign for Chiari. Chiari folk can have many different reflexes emerge without a specific pattern. It kind of gives CHiari folk that unique specialness that doctors love so much! I am not familiar with a Hoffman's reflex extinguishing treatment but it seems similar to the palmar grasp reflex.
Hope that your diagnosis process goes smoothly from here on out.
Mallisa, Hoffmanns and other signs of hypERrelexia are indicative of CENTRAL nerve involvement- so spinal cord or brain stem distress or damage. I had/have several hyper-reflexively signs. I’m glad you are a brain mri, you need to know the full situation, make sure there is not another brain condition that is causing the Chiari. Keep researching like you are and become an expert on your condition. HypER reflexive signs are common with chiari- but not everyone has them…everyone is different.
