Does anyone have a hard time eating or drinking sometimes

I have to eat slowly because i choke alot on my food or liquids. Its hard for me to swallow sometime. Just wondering if anyone experiences this. I had this issue before surgery and im still having it after my surgery, 5 years later....

I have this issue although I didn’t prior to my surgery 4 years ago. I also have to be careful eating and drinking . I hate swallowing pills.

I do, I had a modified barium swallow study done, they found my epiglottis is paralyzed and food only goes down the right side of my esophagus, sometimes food and pills will go up into my sinuses, this can be very painful.

I probably sound like a broken record, but when I was on Topamax at a higher dosage, it caused me to choke terribly on my food. As soon as I realized what was happening and decreased the dosage, the choking went away.

Many of us have a tendency to look at the Chiari re: the swallowing/choking issues, but always not a bad idea to look at the medications as well - even ones that you've been on for awhile. Watch for any recent dosage increases or decreases and note how you feel. Good luck!

The only medications i take is on a when needed and its a narcotic. The problems with the swallowing never went away. Also, during my surgery they had to cut a chunk out next to my palet. Now i have a gap there. Now if i'm not careful enough when i eat or drink sometimes it will come out of my nose.... EEEW sorry kind of gross.

Yeah I have a hard time swallowing liquids. I gag myself all the time. Had the surgery 9 yrs ago. No fun...

Hi, I have issues with choking on food as well. I am 14 years post op. That is one of the few symptoms I still have. I also had a uvuloplasty for sleep apnea 3 years before my decompression, so I feel that is part of the problem.

I often choke on my spit, only you guys would get that! My friends and family say "how in the heck do you manage that!". But yes I do and I have to be careful

I'm interested by the topamax comment as I take 150mg a day.

Not much but still makes me curious. I had surgery and I go back to see surgeon on Jan 8th as I have a artery that has lack of flow as the brain is sitting on it. So we'll see what he says???
