Is there anyone that have received disability after their decompression? If so how did you get the ball rolling(paperwork)?
I applied for disability and was denied twice. I finally got an attorney and had a hearing. I did get approved at the hearing. The whole process took 18 months. I was approved last April and got my first monthly payment in June. I have, however, been waiting for my back pay since then. Since disability is retroactive, you will most likely be getting back pay. This is the lump sum that is owed to from the time you became disabled to the time you are approved. I finally called my attorney and they made phone calls for me. I did get my back pay yesterday which was a Godsend! So whole process to get my back pay was 26 months! Start now because it takes a long time :(

Yes, you can still be disabled even if you didn't have surgery. I would consult with a disability attorney and ask their opinion. You may get denied since you are so young, but don't give up! I wish I had gone straight to an attorney instead of waiting to be denied twice. It is definitely worth a try. If you cannot work especially if your job requires special skills, you should be considered for disability. Start now!

Good question! I wanted to know if people can get disability if you haven't had surgery but have symptoms that don't allow you to work. I hope someone knows the answers to these questions because it's been on my mind for a while.
Thanks I’m gonna contact an attorney soon as possible.
I RECEIVED DISABILITY IN 3 1/2 MONTHS. I ACQUIRED A SS ATTORNEY. GET THE BALL ROLLING NOW. YOU DON'T GET ANY MONEY THE 1ST 6 MTHS FROM THE APPLICATION DATE. YOU RECEIVE RETRO AFTER THAT TIME. GOOD LUCK!
OK thanks, did your doctor back up you or you did it on your own?
I applied for SSD before my Chiari diagnosis. The original diagnosis was encephelopathy (brain disease, kind of vague right.) It has been a long process and I still do not see the light at the end of the tunnel. I did contact an attorney and she told me that she will be able to be right on top of it if I do get denied. She did also say, that if I (or anyone) apply with the help of an attorney, it usually fairs out better. I was told due to minor things like paper work errors etc, they can deny you. Hope this helps. I definitely need some kind of help at this point. Post-op and all of my previous symptoms have returned, plus the terrible headaches that I still have from surgery. I hate getting on here and complaining. I feel like that is all that I do anymore, but this is no fun at all! I will be glad to have a lawyer be on my side and help with this process. Every little task feels like a giant mountain that I have to climb. GOOD LUCK!!!
Thanks Nicolee
I had decompression in Feb. 2009 and was awarded disability on the first try!! Very rare but I got it without an attorney's help. I applied last May and received my first check in Sept. I was very detailed on the application and included every doctor and med that I've ever seen and been on. I had to quit my dream job a year ago and put on the application that I would give anything to be able to work and get my job back but it's impossible for me anymore. I've heard the process can take up to 3 yrs so however long it takes, don't give up!! I wish you the best and hope you get approved quickly :)
