Decrompression surgery in June--migraines now--fioricet

I had decompression brain surgery with the removal of my 1st vertebrae on June 4th. At first I seemed to be doing great--healed well, headaches/ migraines minimal. The only big problems I had were the bacterial infections (2) I had gotten in my stomach/ esophagus due to the steroids the Dr. wasn't supposed to give me before the surgery. Until about two weeks ago--I have been dealing with severe migraines; they have been so bad that I went to the local VAMC (who diagnosed my CM1) I was told that my case is too complex and I should call my NS because the doctor at the VAMC was "afraid he was going to kill me" by giving me certain shots after my surgery. I had already called his office and was awaiting his call back; once his assistant returned my call she told me I should go to the local ER; I told her what the Dr. at the VAMC had said and he did not want to provide my medical treatment. She said she would speak with the NS when he had a break from surgery and would call me back. He wound up prescribing me fioricet to get rid of the migraines. I have been taking this almost everyday because it seems like it helps minimize my migraine; although it makes me extremely tired, and the very next day the migraine is back. I will be getting a Cine MRI on Sept 9th and feel it won't be here soon enough. I am worried that something is wrong; and just want to feel better. Has anyone else had any similar problems?

Hi…
I just want to share my experience with Fiorocet…I, too , take it for severe head aches…howevere, many patients are not told this…one may, and often do…get a rebound headache from the medicine…I am forever grateful to my primary for telling me this when she wrote the script…I did end up getting rebounds from it and then I knew exactly what she was speaking of!! The next days head ache was ER worthy!! So, now I take it only when I really have to.
Let us know how you are doing and what the reports are saying. Best of luck.
Oh, today is the 9th…you have the CINE today…that is good…let us know how it goes.

Keep us updated on how your CINE goes! I hope you start feeling better soon! :)

Fioricet has been the only med that made a difference for me pre op. It is a narcotic though. Yes rebound headaches are possible, and also the drug can become less effective over time requiring higher or more frequent use. Be careful with this. I’m not suggesting you go it without any pain intervention, you may just want to talk to the doctor who prescribed it about alternatives. I hope you get answeres today. I’m sorry your in so much pain.

Ps I take a magnesium supplement a couple times a day and it has made a noticeable difference in my head pain. When I go couple days without it the pain picks up.
