I go for my surgery on June 16, 2014....... I am very nervous, but hopeful for a return to a somewhat normal life. Can any of you give me advice on what to expect after surgery? and maybe how long before you felt any relief?
Thank You.....Chiari7706

Recovery is different for everyone! I had a really good surgical experience, my pain was under control and I had no complications. The first two weeks were probably the hardest. My neck was really sore and stiff and I slept a lot. I tried to take daily walks and do the neck exercises my NS gave me and it seemed to really help. The main thing I noticed after surgery was fatigue. You really need to rest a lot so your body can heal. You'll get wore out with very little activity. This will gradually get better over time. You may also see random symptoms recurring here or there over the first year or even new symptoms cropping up. This is pretty normal and it's part of your body getting used to the normal csf flow so don't panic! Best wishes to you! :)
Each person has a different set of issues, if any. I had many complications that didn't affect my brain. I can't remember the first 6 days that I spent in ICU. I have APS (antiphospholipid syndrome), SLE (lupus) and psoriatic arthritis. I am also anemic and have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Now, after surgery, my intestines and endocrine system have not returned to working correctly status. My lungs seem to have began working again and the fluid hasn't returned.
The only advice I have is to be as prepared as possible, gather as much information as you can, and question everything! You know you better than anyone else. If it feels wrong, it probably is. You can expect some pain or discomfort, naturally. However, if it really HURTS or you get really ILL feeling, speak up. Be vocal about what you need at that moment. Your needs will most likely change in a few minutes.
Good luck with everything!
