Chiari and car accident

has anyone developed symptoms after a rear-end collision. this was a low impact collision for me. Prior to this, never had any health problems...... had an MRI & CT Scan after three months of headaches, neck pain........ then symptoms got worse, including vision and short term memory, so a 2nd MRI was ordered about 10 months after the accident that showed the Chiari Malformation.

Any thoughts??????

My symptoms started after head trauma during a cliff diving incident. So yes, there are the rare few of us that are of the accidental nature. You aren't alone! But we are few! :-) Makes us even more unique!

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia after giving birth to my daughter in 2003. Never had an issue before that. 2007 I was rear ended while at a complete stop at a light. It was not bad but months after that the headaches started and progressed from there. 5 years of being told it is not my problem by Dr after Dr I finally took matters into my own hands and sent my scans to the WI Chiari Center. Now in less than a month I am having decompression surgery. You are def not alone! Best of luck to you!

This is very common with Chiari. It isn’t caused by the accident, but the symptoms can start after an accident. I have always been sick, but I was in a minor car accident and I got much worse. So it is very possible that the accident caused your Chiari to come out. How to fix it, I don’t know. I’m still working on that it’s been a year and a half since my accident and it hasn’t gone away

Y Yes,

I was in a couple of car accidents in the mid 70's, started having headaches, increasing over the years. Finally diagnosed in 1997 with ACM. Decompression surgery followed in 1998, some improvement, especially with the headache part of it. Still living with a lot of other symptoms along with other disabling issues.

My intractable headache started after a car accident, I had headaches before that but nothing like what came after.

My daily, never ending headaches started shortly after I was in a rear end collision. After several doctors, and several interesting therapies(such as antibiotics)I saw a neurologist who ordered an MRI and diagnosed me with Chiari. This was back in 2000. He didn’t think my symptoms had anything to do with my chiari and tried several more treatments on me including physical therapy, shots to the back of my head, and strong medications…none of which worked.
It seems that many people start experiencing symptoms of Chiari after an accident. The best thing you can do is find a dr.who has experience with Chiari and will take you seriously and be able to help you.

Hello, I pray all is well. I'm not sure if mine came from the rear-end collision but I didn't have ANY symptoms until almost a yr later. With sharp pains when I squeeze, cough or make sudden moves and I also had numbness on my left side. After a few test I was diagnosed with Chiari.

I was diagnosed with Chiari's after I spun out on black ice in Feb 2013. I had to have a herniated disc removed and a piece of bone removed from C6-7, that also broke off. My right hand was numb and tingling down my arm. Since that surgery, my hand and arm are better (kinda) but the rest of the symptoms are still there. They are waiting for my neck to heal to consider decompression surgery.

I found that i had been born with chiari but did'nt find out untill a car crash saved my life. I was going to work one morning after christmas when a guy who had been drinking the night before ran a red light and went into the side of me, my whiplash symptoms wernt getting any better, about 8 months later i was refered by my gp to see a orthopedic doc who did a full body scan, he then sent me to a neuro-surgeon, who then dropped the bomb shell, by this time i had already gone parralised from my neck down, i just woke in the morning like that and could'nt even alert my husband who had his back to me i eventually fell back to sleep and had a headache for the rest of the day, when i told my NS about this he said next time i may not be so lucky and explained it was urgent that i had surgery. :( When my husband asked how urgent he said that week, i said no i had a family ect, to which he replied go home talk to them and come back tomorrow, we did this but unfortunatly i had fell asleep downstairs and again i went parralised my eldest daughter saw this and begged me to have surgery, we went back and 2 days later had the opp, that was 1998 everything was going fine untill 2 years ago and all the symptoms i had growing up which i thought were normal have started to return i go back to my NS in july. Not everyone with chiari will revert back pre surgery. I wish you well in your recovery. x :)
