My 17 year old daughter was just diagnosed with Chiari 1 but it might be possible that she has Chiari 2. I was diagnosed with Chiari 5 years ago and at that time my herniation was 6mm. Well, she was in an accident February of this year and her MRI states hers is 18mm. The neurologist is sending her for three spinal MRI's and referring to a neurosurgeon. Is it possible he suspects she will need surgery? I really do not want her to have to go that route. Any advice/information would help. Thanks!
Gosh, that’s some bad news. So sorry for your daughter and you. I understand not wanting your child to have that surgery. I think it all comes down to symptoms, the possibility of those symptoms coming from the chiari, and the likelihood of any possible nerve damage due to the chiari. I think seeing a neurosurgeon is the right start. Getting second opinions is a good idea too. Did you have the surgery?
Thanks! She mainly has headaches and neck pain, as well as cannot sleep. She is moody but that we attribute to her being a teen and her car accident. Otherwise, she seems fine but it's really only been two months since her accident so it's not certain if other things could develop. I am wondering if this was due to the accident because it was pretty significant (the car was totaled and it was pretty bad).
Hi Jcdemar,
No I did not and am very skeptical of doing it. I am medicated right now and that seems to be working. I am ok with that though. When I take my meds I am fine but when I do not that's a different story. I am hoping there are no other issues that show up in the spinal MRI's. I would hate for her to have to go through this in her senior year of high school.
Good luck the doc appts! I’m hoping for the best for your girl.
