So I have 8mm herniations on my tonsils. From what my mother and other doctors have told me that is a clear sign of Chiari's. However, my neurologist says it isn't Chiari's until they are at 10mm. So is it Chiari's? An I have terrible headaches all the time. Up to 4 in a day 6 days a week. My neurologist is trying to treat with medications to prevent and treat pain on 3 of those 6 days. I currently have a headache classified as a migraine that is into the 4th day.Today my doctor prescribed Vicodin for the pain (which I don't want to take if I can avoid it). Any tips on pain management? Should I start looking into another neurologist? Also anyone heard of a Pineal cyst? A recent CT scan showed one in my brain.
I only have a 5 mm herniation and had surgery for Chiari. My NS said it was only a 50/50 chance it would correct my issues, but it fixed everything and I’ve had mild symptoms since my surgery.
Nynda,
I'm sorry you are in so much pain! I have an 11 mm herniation and have pain similar to what you are describing. From everything I have read on Chiari (and I have read a lot!), it starts at 3 to 5mm. I personally would find another neurologist or as Emmaline suggested find a good neurosurgeon. I had to switch neurologists, too. The neurologist who discovered it gave up after a certain number of pills didn't work and said that it was all in my head. I like the neurologist I have now because she is trying to help me and understands that I am actually in a lot of pain. Ice packs (frozen peas work great) and heating pads help some with the pain. I usually carry a bottle of mess free IcyHot in my purse in case I have pain on the go. I hope you can find some relief very soon! I'll keep you in my prayers!
I called my family doctor today and requested a new referral. I cannot see my current neurologist until July anyway. My migraine has hit say 6 today. I will trying ice packs, I use a heating pad at night (as I cannot sleep through the night from pain). Thanks everyone. Hoping to find some relief soon.
Nynda, I can just echo what everyone else is saying- that NL is unawares. Any NL will only be able treat with meds, though. If you want to discuss surgery you need to get an appt with a Chiari specialized surgeon. Of course several opinions are a good idea- the Chiari specialist will be the key.

Monday I see a neurosurgeon. So hopefully progress will be made.
Thanks so much for the list of questions!
