Tarlov cyst

On a recent lumbar mri , a large tarlov cyst was seen on lower lumbar to sacral spine. Does anyone know about these? Treatment or causes? Your experience? Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Tarlov cysts are sometimes associated with tethered cord, and also often with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Hi there, last year I had a MRI for headaches, vague numb spot on my back, temp. issues, and the only thing they found was tarlov cyst and Chiari 1. Very interesting to hear this information. I have extreme pain on my left lower side of spine. Neuro said oh neither is anything to worry about. Do Yoga 40 mins a day. But upon further examination referred me to sleep doc in practice due to fact I was not sleeping more than 10 min periods at night. Long story short, he sent me away for another doc to deal with. I am being treated for "seizure activity" that he feels is not that, but something else. Had another f/u EEG 24 hr few weeks ago and it was normal. So medicine is working! Any rate, I was also diagnosed with narcolepsy. I am feeling better as far as sleep goes. I think there is so much connected we just do not realized with Chiari what issues it causes. Mine is a 9 mm, nothing to worry about from what he states. I get that, I do not want surgery. I am walking, talking. Yes I have "issues" but I want to learn to control them best I can - until that is no longer a option & say I cannot walk. Sorry to ramble. I am new to the site and was very excited almost to see your post. Thank you SO much for sharing this information.

PattyAnn, I have a “tiny” tarlov cyst in my sacrum. Yes my back hurts, but so does the rest of my body, lol. Connection with Chiari and EDS… I believe it! I do not, however, have any useful information about them, sorry. Since yours is large, you might consult an NS to be sure it’s ok and find out what to be on the lookout for. I have read that large tarlovs are drained and then packed to keep them from collapsing. I have also read that sometimes they leak CSF. Did the report give you measurements of its size?

Thanks for the information Jenn. The measurments on MRI report say 3 cm length x2.1 cm craniocaudal x 2.2 cm anterior posterior dimension. PattyAnn

Interesting - I saw on a spinal mri of mine that I had "multiple Tarlov cysts" in addition to my Chiari Malformation. My neuro never mentioned the cysts - I just happened to read a copy of my MRI. So must be connected? I had a 20 MM Chiari and was decompressed a year ago.
