New to group

Hello I’m still very new to the group, and very happy to find a support group for Chiari. I’m currently in the military about to have my decompression surgery very soon. I have to admit I’m a little scared and worried, not knowing what the outcome will be, is there anyone on here that had the surgery that is still currently serving in the military or getting ready for an MEB, how is the transition for you???

Hi Michelle,

Im currently going through an MEB and just had my decompression. I’m going through a lot of ups and downs because you really can’t move your neck. I have a home nurse with me so make sure that the case manager in the hospital provides you with a shower chair, walker, soft collar neck brace (if needed), and home nurse care with physical therapy. It can be a long transitional rough transition if you are use to being on the go. Make sure it is annotated if they start a MEB. Army rule is if it has not been diagnosed within the 1st 8 years of service, the army has to claim it as service connected so that you can get disability. I have two weeks of con leave left and my nurse said if I can’t drive, turn my neck L&R or look down then I cannot return to work. Also, make sure they get your pain under control in the hospital. Dalaudid did not work for me. Make sure they give you disalvable zofran for nausea, vertigo patches, stool softeners & miralax for constipation from narcotics, muscle relaxers cause your neck muscles with tense up, and good pain meds. Drink plenty of water and stay up on your pain meds before the pain starts.

Nila thank you very much for the info, I just had my 15 yrs in the military so yes it’s a little frustrating getting this far and not being able to retire, but with all the pain I’m so ready for a change. They have already been getting me set up with a home nurse which will help me out a lot.

Also get your doc to sign your temporary handicap tag application. It will work wonders when needed. I just hit 12 years so I know the feeling. You are welcome. If you need anymore info just ask

Hello,

I am in the Coast Guard and just took an MRI showing Chiari 1 malformation. My neck and jaw pain is awful! I have 9 years in service and I am extremly worried about my carrer. Does anyone know of a situation where military members are medically retired or medically discharged?

,

Sorry to hear about your dx . After 12 yrs was in army they medically retired for the same reason. When the doctors dx with CH1, after my surgery the military started the MEB. I fought to stay in but the simple fact that I was not able to wear a helmet and bare weight on my back render me unfit for duty. More then likely you will be medically retired. Last year the military rated 30% just for the condition alone. Don't worry about it to much focus on the post op recovery . You will be taking care of once you get out. I wish you luck and hope you have a speedy recovery.

I am currently in this situation. I have almost 11 years in and am in the process of a MEB.
