Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to this site and any support site actually. Fortunately, my story is a happy one. I'm currently 21 years old but at the age of 15 I was diagnosed with a type 1 and underwent surgery. The experience was indescribable, which most of you can probably relate to. No one really listened to me and I was rapidly declined because of this. Also, being the age that I was (15 isnt the best time of your life) I think I kind of shut out all my feelings that I had about getting sick and now I'm finally trying to come to terms with them. Anyway, I thought this might help. So just wanted to share!

Just wanted to say hi! It sounds like we have a lot of similarities! I had my surgery when i was 12, im 26 now! I saw that you’re studying to become a child life specialist! I also went to school for child life! Where did you have your surgery? And where are you going to college!?
Hello Maura,
I am new here too. I just wanted to say hello and tell you how wonderful it is to have read your story. Thank you for sharing as well as updating it. You are a true role model to everyone with our condition. I wish you the best of luck with your education. You have already overcome what is most likely the toughest challenge you will ever face and have been victorious. Well done, keep up the good fight.
Kindest Regards,
Dennis

Maura, I’m glad you are willing to share your story because it brings to light the emotional part of this. I think we all struggle with the heartbreak of being sick, but coupled with the torment of disbelieving /dismissing doctors and sometimes family members… It takes a toll and grows roots.
Was your family supportive? How is your noggin now?
Jenn
Thank you all so much for your welcome and kind words! It was an experience to shape who I am today.
Dennis- I'm glad you are on this site also and I most certainly agree with your post. It has lead me into the direction of life that I think is my true passion.
Gretchen- I sent you a direct message! The similarities are too perfect :)
Jenn- Thank you. It was an extremely emotional time and I think just now I am coming to terms with it. My family was beyond supportive, at the time I think both my parents knew something was seriously wrong after about a year of my sickness. They stuck by me and advocated for my MRI. Throughout my hospitalization neither left my side and it's brought my immediate family a lot closer. At 15, you're kind of going through that I hate everyone stage (as embarrassing as it is to say, that's how I was) afterwords, I became extremely close with my parents and still am. Same with my younger brother who was 12 at the time. My noggin is i'd like to say 98% better, I'm cleared from the doctors and headache free! Occasionally, I do get a strange sensation if I move my neck wrong/someone hugs me around my neck too tight. Thank you for getting in touch with me!
