My Introduction

Hi everyone.
I wanted to introduce myself and give a bit of back story while I familiarize myself with the website and all the information here. I’m 51 and was diagnosed with Chiari type 1 in 2008. Thankfully no syrinx. I have many symptoms: headaches, tinnitus, nausea, dizziness, vision issues. Then secondary issues related directly to the Chiari, namely depression and TMJ. My neurosurgeon, family doctor and I have all agreed that surgery is not an option at this time and are working together to control the symptoms as much as possible with conservative treatments such as medications for the headaches and nausea, as well as the depression. I’ve also made some significant lifestyle changes and thanks to some very good health insurance at work I’m now medically retired on a very good disability insurance plan. After 20 years as a legal assistant, stopping work was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. Dealing with that loss has been a challenge to say the least. The other challenge is realizing that I do have limits and if I push them, Chiari pushes back. So I only push them when its REALLY important. Smile
Also, I have two sons, 1 wonderful granddaughter and 2 spoiled cats, as well as some great family and friends. I’m looking forward to making some new friends here.
Missy

Welcome Missy! We all understand what it is like to go through this, so I hope you can find answers to your questions and find emotional, if not physical, relief. :)

Thanks Surya and Emmaline. :) Even though I live in a city with 60,000 plus people, I have never actually talked to anyone with Chiari. I saw a doctor who was filling in for my doc who was on vacation last week and she said she has only seen 5 other patients with Chiari during her entire practice, so it will be nice to compare experiences. Take care.

Welcome Missy I’m so glad you’ve found us!!! This is the best place for support and knowledge
