Hi everyone! Smile here. Thank you all for my warm welcoming. I have something that I am researching now that I would like some input on. I am reading some of the horror stories and some of the good stories about getting surgery. Can anyone tell me what they do so that I better understand how that will make my symptoms dissipate? Some of the stories I have read have told me that if the surgeons hit my nerve patterns that they could disturb my long term memory. I was wondering if there are any thoughts on this idea of your memories making up your identity and what would happen if this did occur.
Smile, I have not heard of this before, I have heard of short term memory being affected, though. For me, my short term memory was affected by the Chiari, but improved with the surgery. I still have some issues with it but over all improved. Glad your here!
Smile, it is very interesting to me too. My uneducated guess is that it had to do with the duress on the cerebellum and the hormonal implications from an entire brain under pressure.
I do want to say, though, and I’m not even sure you were on this trail, but I don’t think memory will effect you so that you loose your sense of self or identity. I have, just once, forgotten my own name, but that was more a cognition issue in struggling to make my mouth pronounce it.
Thanks for sending me that article. I will definitely look into it. I am not sure what the case was where this patients’ memory loss happened, perhaps there was a cognitive defect there. It’s interesting to me to see how important I treat each day now knowing anything can happen.
I read the article mentioned above and it is interesting. I have noticed that short term memory has been an issue for me for sometime. While I've just been diagnosed, I still wonder about whether my Chiari is the cause. For example, my fiance had a conversation with me this morning that I have no recollection of, whatsoever. Not the first time that has happened. According to him, I was even taking part in the conversation. So, I can't even attribute it to any hearing loss. (Hearing loss is another issue, I was diagnosed with it when I was 19.) I have to write anything down I need to remember or it goes in one brain cell and out the other.
I am having a very hard time with Short-Term memory loss.. For the past year I have slightly notice forgetting some things. I always made a joke about it, but it has gotten so much worse. My Boyfriend can't quite understand that the Chiari can have that effect so he's always giving me a hard time about forgetting things. I can't remember what he said right after he says it, can't remember what I'm doing as I'm doing it.. I'm only 23 :/
