Got records and confused

I was looking at DD's mychart and the admission paperwork (for decompression and duraplasty) says:
"Spina bifida with hydrocephalus, unspecified region - Primary
Chiari I malformation
Other specified congenital anomalies of brain
Budd-Chiari syndrome"

I expected the the Chiari 1 Malformation but we have never been told that she had spina bifidia with hydrocephalus let alone that it was her primary diganosis and what is Budd-Chiari?

Is this just coding stuff? Why would they use that many different codes for a diagnosis of CM 1? I'm afraid to use google because of what I may find.

It sounds like someone doesn't know their codes...they put down the wrong "Chiari"

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by narrowing and obstruction of the veins of the liver. This narrowing or obstruction slows or prevents blood from flowing out of the liver and back to the heart which can lead to liver damage.

She wasn't born with Spina Bifida was she?

I got a referral to a Neurologist yesterday and they put down Budd Chiari Syndrome and I told the nurse that wasn't right and she said that is the way the doctor wrote it so she could not change it. OMG...Really?? There is a big difference between the two...lol.

SparkyID7

Her only diagnosis (ever) was migraines and CM type 1. Well now she's got a bunch of other stuff popping up post surgery and we are going in for another MRI with contrast of her neck/spine but the Neuro did not say anything about hydro or Spina Bifida.

I would ask the surgeon about the spina bifida. I know there is a connection of spina bifida and Chiari, and I were you I would want to know all about that diagnosis and possible symptoms. I rhink the hydro can be part of the Chiari. Good thing you checked the reports. I got a hold of my surgery reports and found out that I have some neuromas in my brain… Kinda my business! Sorry, one more thing to research and wonder about:(
