Hi there! I’m extremely confused now. I had an MRI in 2010 that Sao I have type 1 chiari, nobody told me until a couple weeks ago. Last week I was able to go to the neurologist thinking I’d have answers. The neurologist said if my chiari would’ve progressed from 6mm since my only MRI in 2010 then I would be passing out more or in a coma. Is this true? She felt I didn’t need an MRI. I’m a little confused because I have all the symptoms of chiari and they’ve only worsened specially since November.
Hi there! Thanks for your reply. I had an MRI in 2010 and the report skipped the doctors and went to the insurance (we just found this out). I was in a minor car accident in 2009 and my headaches are everyday since and the migraines are 1-2 times a week though sometimes it can last 5 days. I have many other symptoms but anyways they were getting really bad this year so a couple weeks ago I went to my doctor and after asking my symptoms and talking to me he asked if anyone had told me I had chiari type 1. I told him no and he said on the MRI report it says I needed a follow up MRI later on to see if it’s progressing. He wanted me to go to neurologist soon so less than a week later I went to the neurologist (last week) and she has the CD and report of the MRI in 2010. I just wish she would do another MRI so if it’s not progressed I can feel better and if it has I can know how much. I can’t ask her too though because then the insurance from the car accident won’t pay and it’s the only insurance I have right now.
Your regular doctor couldn't order it and say it is a follow up comparison from the car accident?

Hi there! Yes he could’ve but he wanted me to go to a neurologist cuz he felt that the neurologist would follow up on it. But she had me go get a CT scan today after reading my MRI from 2009 and now I play the waiting game again
I hope you get some answers soon. Please keep us updated.
SaraMarie,
It's very common for symptoms to increase or start after a car acident. That's how my pain symptoms started. I had a car accident and got whiplash and a within a few days I started to have shoulder pain and neck pain and then eventually migraines. It took 4 1/2 years after that to be diagnosed and I had someone miss mine on an MRI 2 years after the accident. I know how confusing it can be and how complicated it can be when there's an accident involved. I had a very difficult time fighting with insurence to get help because of the limited help from the car accident insurence. The trama of the whiplash can cause the herniation to get worse and then gravity and life can also contribute to it getting worse. Your symptoms can progress even if your herniation stays at 6mm though. Is there any way you can either find another NL or make an appointment to see a NS? Do you have a lawyer from the car accident? If you do maybe he/she could help you figure out how to get the MRI and care you need within the perameters of your insurence so you don't jepordize it. Good Luck..............Wendy
