Chiari and disc fusion surgery

hI just found out through my gp that my NS is going to operate on my discs(c5c6c7)the same time as my decompression surgery?first I have heard of it!! Has anyone else had these two problems done at the same time? And how can it be done as I was told that my discs if I decided to have them fused is done from the front through to the back, but I know I will be on my back for my decompression surgery?? I am very confused as this wasn’t discussed at all when I saw him and only found out when I contacted my gp for the date on the letter he had sent them. Any ideas. Of how this will be done if I go ahead? Thanks xxxx

Hi Skeeter,

I had my whole C Spine rebuilt at the same time as my CM Surgeries. The went through the back Since it was already mostly open. My incision runs from the top of my head to my shoulder blades. Then 3 years later they took out C5 and fused C6. You will have more pain with C Spine and CM Surgery at the same time and a longer recovery time. Call your NS and leave a message asking them how exactly they plan to do the surgeries. Mine took a team of surgeons.and 16 hours. Also ask him if he has a plan for your post op pain management and follow up care. Did they say anything about C1-C4? If I can answer any questions for you I will. While you are in ICU everything feels swollen and I felt like I couldn't breathe and everything was so dry. They did give me a mouth swab and it helped tremendously. Remember to ask for one. Please let us know what you find out.

Hi skeeter. I had a fusion done c4 thr c7 done in 2011. Just this march I had my decompression & surgery for stenosis c3. The reason I had my fusion done was my cervical area did not have the natural c shape ( kyphosis ). You might want to ask your ns. Take care

Robin,

My daughter has a Thoracic Kyphosis, but not CM. Have you ever been checked for Ehler's Danlos Syndrome? It is common in both.
