Aquired chiari from meningitis

Has anyone been diagnosed with acquired chiari, due to infection like Meningitis? Just curious as my daughter had viral meningitis before her symptoms appeared.

Thank you so much for any info and input!!

Hi..

There is a member here that has had menengitis 1st..then they found her Chiari....I am sure she will post about her experiences..I will send her a private message to give her a heads up to reply to you.

How old is your daughter? How is she doing?

Sorry that she is dealing with all of this..in my thoughts and prayers.

Lori

My daughter is 15. She seems to be getting worse every couple days. Since her meningitis she has gone from have a feww bad days a week to only having a few decent hours during the day, if we are lucky. I would love to talk to someone with this same experience. I have been curious about this for a while.

Thank you for the reply!

I had Chemical Meningitis from a CSF Leak where I had Micro Vascular Decompression Surgery. My CM was diagnosed 8 months later. I wonder if all the Lumbar Punctures make my CM worse. A local NS tried 10+ times in one night till I said No More. It was awful.

That is just horrible.

I am just curious about this as everything has gone down hill quickly since she had meningitis (viral).

Okay…I am the member that Lori is talking about, so I am happy to share what I know. No, viral meningitis DOES NOT cause Chiari. Your daughhter was probably born with Chiari, but did not show symptoms until she had memingitis. That’s what happened to me. The explaination makes perfect sense. The brain and the protective lining of the brain are very tempermental. When you have meningitis, the lining of your brain is infected. So now, your brain is pretty pisssed off. This alone is enough for the Chiari to start showing symptoms. BUT, meningitis has an added bonus to piss off your brain in addition to the meningitis…the spinal tap. A spinal tap works by sucking up spinal fluid into that needle. It literally creates a vacuum that sucks all matter in the spinal canal to the needle. That action scucks an already existing Chiari further into the spinal column. There really isn’t a way to tell which one made the Chiari rear its ugly head, or it could be a combination of both. After my viral meningitis, I went down hill FAST. I had meningitis in February, and by April/May, I couldn’t walk without a walker. I lost most of my vision. I was in constant pain. I am not saying any of this to scare or frighten you. Your daughter is very young. It is very possible the same things won’t happen to her. However, in my opinion and only in my opinion, I would bring in a Neurosurgeon to monitor things. I will private message you my number if you have any questions. You can call me anytime with questions. Think positive, and know that I am praying for you both.

Tracy - did you get my private message with my phone number? I’d really love to help in anyway I can, even if it’s just to talk. Call me anytime. I know first hand what your daughter is going through. I traveled down the same scary road. Please let me try to help.

I did thank you. I am responding to you now. I would love to get your input.
