15 yr old Son with Chiari/Syrinx-need more opinions

My son is 15 and had decompression by Dr. Michael Levy in San Diego in October 2011. Had a syrinx in cervical area and it has not shrunk since operation 1 yr ago. Saw Dr. Baztdorf at UCLA in August 2012, and he recommends to reduce cerebral tonsils to open canal area. I would like to get one more opinion. Does anyone have a great recommendation for one more doctor. Son still in some pain on a daily basis. Thank you, Rich

Rich,

I live in Massachusetts so I have no personal recomendations but I found this from an earlier post in 2011. It seems pretty thorough. Good luck with your son. It's great that you are getting second and third opinions. The most important decision to be made is who will do the surgery.

doctor Fineman a wonderful man who I consulted with what I was pregnant about the safety of delivering. He will be doing my surgery when it its time.

Dr. Batzdorf is my doctor. I did however also consult with Dr. Ellenbogen at Harborview hospital in Seattle. He is primarily a pediatric Chiari specialist but also does adults. I e-mailed him and them sent my records to him and he did a consult with me on the phone. Amazing man. He basically said exactly the same things that Dr. Batzdorf told me so since i live here in Calf i decided to stay closer to home. He would be a good third opinion that is on this side of the USA. I had my first surgery done in San Diego. I too had a large syrinx and it did not shrink at all. Dr B did a reduction of my tonsils in a second sugery and now two years later (just saw him last week) the syrinx is still continuing to shrink.

Good luck and God's blessings.

Rich,

I know that you went to Dr Batzdorf... it is my feeling that you shold have tried Dr. Marvin Bergsnieder... He is also at UCLA but he specializes in Sringomeylia and ACM.. I just took my husband there to see him for a second opinion. I loved him. It's sad for my husand because even afer 7 brain surgeries that he still has a syrinx and has a teathered spinal cord in the top of his spinal column... But Doctor Bergsnieder was AMAZING... I will pray for your son. This is just devastating to deal with.... Hope this helps...
