Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday and trying to keep my nerves in check. I need for this to be a success!. I want/need to be able to return to full active duty. I’ve heard that once you have the surgery that you may not be able to return to work if you have a stressful job. Well mine doesnt get any more stressful…as a police officer that is all you are faced with. Having to make snap judgments. But i cannot put this surgery off. I have been increasingly forgetful…so mucj to the point where my mom brought it to my attention. I dont really forget things at work, I guess because I have to keep my guard up and head on a swevel. Ha! How ironic huh… Makes me REALLY think about this surgery…I NEED relief though. I can’t be normal and laugh, cry, sneeze, vomit, ect. I just want some normalcy!
Someone asked me what is normal after I asked the same question. I looked at her funny and she said there is know such thing as normal. I know what your going thru its a hard wait. I know how stressfull you job is I use to be a 911 operator and TAC officer for stated computer system. I have seen first hand the stress of this job. I had to leave my job back in 2010. I didn't know what was wrong with me, but I did know I had to quit before someone got hurt with my memory loss. It the hardest thing I have ever had to do I loved my job. Take your time if you want to go back to work. You know as well as I how important it is to be 100% at all times. I'm somewhere around 9 weeks post opt I have had my ups and downs, but one thing I learned the hard way is that if you get up to soon you are only going to delay the healing time. Some days you will feel great, but don't let that fool you it can chang in a second. Relax and give your body the time it needs to heal.
I don't have any answers for you, regarding returning to active duty, but I wanted to wish you luck on your upcoming surgery. I totally understand how you are feeling. It's very stressful, the time between scheduling and getting the surgery-- the waiting is stressful lol.
Plan on at least a few months of recovery. There is a lot that needs to recover- your brain, your incision, your neck, the nerves in your scalp. Even emotionally, you need time to get back to normal. I cannot stress enough that your taking it slow in the beginning will pay off in the end, you simply cannot rush the recovery with surgery like this. You will just end up back at square one and in a world of hurt.
I wish you luck for a very smooth, textbook surgery!

Thanks everyone…it feels great to express myself and how I feel. Here I can let my hair down everyone knows how I feel. My concerns and nervousness. I ALWAYS feel better after talking with you guys. This place lets me know that I’m not going crazy. I plan on taking our very slow and not rushing recovery.
Hi Roxanne - just wanted to wish you the best of luck and say that as long as you don’t have any major complications, you should have no problem returning to duty after a reasonable recovery period.
I’m 4 weeks 2 days post op and I practically want to go mountain climbing I feel that good! I am very interested in your field and have done 4 ridealongs in the past. While of course everything I’ve seen is only a tiny fraction of what I’m sure you deal with, based on my experiences of my surgery and ridealongs I truly believe in my heart that this surgery can make you even better at your job (though I’m sure you are pretty fantastic already!).
I know everyone is different, but i believe you will do great and be great! Good luck!
