That is great information jenM! Now that I think about it, someone told me that also and it made me feel so much better. …maybe it was jenM!! You are hearing this straight from an RN! Please don’t worry anymore…I know…so easy to say…but now you know what causes it and it can be prevented…not to mention, not everyone even experiences it. Thinking of you!

Just as everyone has said the cause for vomiting is the medications given for anesthesia. A CRNA that I work with (I’m an RN) said to tell whoever will be the anesthesia provider that you get PONV (post-op nausea vomiting) and they will place a patch on that will reduce your risk for emesis. I know that I do have PONV following general anesthesia and will be asking for a patch during my pre-op phase. Most important to listen to your body when eating food and the IV will be in until you demonstrate an ability to tolerate liquids.
Vijo, yes. Stool softeners, not laxatives are usually given at hospital or recommended if you are put on a regimen of pain killers, but even over the counter medicine and remedies should be advised by your surgeon. In my case, I was already taking stool softeners, was given them at hospital and told to stay on them but I think we should not advise someone to take anything their surgeon doesn’t already know they are on being that surgery is Tuesday, but I don’t think this really relates to her question. Wishing you a pain free day every day
Hello there. I had my surgery on July 19, 2011. I stayed in the hospital for 3 days.I didn't take any pain reliever when I got home. However I had my constipation a week after. I took laxative without my Dr's advise. The effect was bad. I had LBM and throw out a lot. So I was rushed again to the hospital and was confined for 4 days. After a month I had my therapy sessions. Now am still dependent on my cane cause of poor balance. Now am starting to feel the symptoms again prior to my surgery.I read Chiari does not go away after surgery. It progresses as the person gets older. Well it has something to do with my age perhaps. Am now 65 years old.... Be brave don't be afraid. Just get a good team of Drs.....GOD bless
I was in the hospital for 8 days, and I do feel that it was enough. My symptoms had diminished greatly and I was ready to leave.
Yes, I was very sick right after after the surgery. I found that it was the medication pump. The self medication unit. As soon as I was off of it, I felt a lot better. I was on IV pain meds and antibiotics after the pump. But by day 5 was off the IV.
I was able to swallow normal food about day 3.
Questions are good. Remember to write them down for the doctors also. You will forget.
