Is there a scarier place for people with Chiari than in the shower?
The peril starts from the very beginning.....
Bending over to start the water running and then having to lift one foot to climb in. (Never an easy task) Then putting a foot down on a wet slippery surface only then to add soap to the situation!! Closing my eyes to wash my hair and lift my hands up over my head all at the same time is almost guarenteed to make me dizzy. If I get dizzy there's always a chance I'll knock down a bottle of shampoo and have to move quickly to avoid it hitting my foot.(maybe the only time I move quickly) And then having to bend over in what is now a soapy wet slippery tub to pick it up so I don't step on it by mistake!
Heaven forbid my legs need to be shaved...... adding a sharp implement into the situation !?! ....It's a cruel joke.....LOL
I'm always grateful and so relieved when it's over....
I totally agree...I hate when you wash your hair and are rinsing it & you get off balance because your eyes are closed. Then you hit the spot on the back of you head and electric shocks almost bring you to your knees. Chiari is so much fun.... : -(
I think we should walk around with a warning on your back.....telling everyone to stay 50 ft back in Case of Emergencies.
I'm sorry but I had to laugh. But it's so true. Now add a broken lower back to that factor. When I walk my rt foot feels like a club and is coming down really hard because I can't feel it. I'm having back surgery next month if not sooner, I'm at my pain thresh hold... TracyZ said:

LOL, funny, Wendy! I have imagined me pulling down the shower curtain...that closing of the eyes while rinsing the soap out of my hair is an adventure every time! I don't shave my legs much anymore! Or lock the bathroom door...just in case the paramedics need to get in and hopefully my husband will get there first and throw a towel over me! Egads!
A chair..... Why didn't I think of that? I might look into that although then I'll have to figure out how to get up from the chair. LOL

Haha, Wendy! Before surgery I had to get a shower chair, they're the best! It takes the pressure off of standing up on "those" days when you're not too steady on your feet.
I still have my chair in my shower, even tho I'm pretty steady these days...but I can't give it up for shaving my legs! It's actually more like a stool, it does not have a back. I've always had a hand held shower head, so if I had to sit down I was able to rinse off easily.
That's so funny. My husband has started walking ahead of me when I am going down stairs. He thinks he'll catch me. I tell him it's more like break my fall, when I take him down with me!

It's great that we can laugh at this stuff. It's good medicine and sometimes the only thing that keeps me sane.I hope your back problem gets resolved soon.

And there you have it my worst nightmare...I see myself falling, taking out the shower curtain getting knocked unconscious and awakened to paramedics standing over me naked and soapy on the bathroom floor. LOL At least if I'm awake I could try and cover up with the curtain. Atleast I'm not alone in my fright. : )

Hi Wennyann, I have the same problem as well in the shower I thought it was just me I feel much better that someone else is going though it as well. however no it hurt you as well because it take me a long time to consider going in the shower because the water hurts my body my muscle tighten up as soon as I turn the water on.most of the time I have to take a muscle relaxer before I go in or ask for someone to be close by while in the shower fear that something may happen fall or anxiety atttack. Wennyann thank you for the post it made me feel much better about myself.
It's nice to know that I'm not alone is great adventure called "showering"!!! It is so nice to read that others have a sense of humor about Chiari. I joke about it all the time to my family and friends. If you cant laugh about, you will be very a very sad person. Love it, keep it up. :)
Very often the water spray hurts me also, especially when I am just starting out. I dread it each and every time. It gets better the longer I'm in there but it takes my breath away at first. Most people take showers to relax we take one and it's just the opposite. LOL

I agree a sense of humor is so important. Sometimes it hurts to laugh but it lets us forget for a few minutes. My kids know that I will do just about anything for a laugh. Now that they are teenagers it kind of terrifies them because they soooo don't want to be embarassed. LOL It's my secret weapon! Glad to hear from you.
